Somedays I wish I could pick up a phone and say, "could we slow this whole thing down???" Ie, aging. But accepting age with grace is of course one of the deepest forms of wisdom. This is a wise painting, as is your desire in painting it. I mean, to embrace and love all stages of life in all of us. It's not easy to paint a decaying bouquet and still convey love and sensuality; but you've done that here. There is, of course, beauty and sensuality in aging, but it's not easy to capture in art. The lower flowers here are in states of decay, and that would seem particularly hard to paint (with all the paintings of flowers in the history of art, how many do we see in decay?). But you captured the mix of youthful richness with the drier fact of decay with all its new colorations and the highly complex layers of tissues, lights and shade. One of the things I noticed when this went up is that you captured several stages from full to aged, in the same work. What comes across is that the older frailer blooms are completely connected to, and feel held up by, the newer fuller blooms---they're all held as part of the same bouquet. And the lower holds up the upper as well, a two way connection. Your love shows powerfully in that, as well as in the loving-care you gave to all the details. A very complex vision, beautifully done, and conveying a deep love of the whole organism, from fresh to old; and surrounded by a kind of stained glass colored background which is like a sheet of beautifully textured colored glass. Moving and beautiful. And it has some of the finest painting of decaying flowers I've ever seen.
