Description

Captured 4/27/14, at the beautiful Renaissance Faire, held at the beautiful Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, in semi beautiful Irwindale, California. A ZOOM is highly recommended. These are just a few of the several small establishments that were situated throughout the Faire grounds to attract customers. Clothing, glassware, tankards, perfumes, swords, shields, food, beverages, jewelry, knickknacks, et al. Combine that with the exorbitant admission and parking fees charged and we have a nice sizable income. But the crowd was having such a jolly time entertaining and being entertained that they felt it was really worth it. If nothing else, at least they could show off their archaic raiment. Arrivederci.

I always feel the strong urge to buy something at these affairs. Not that I need anything, I just WANT something. Must be that subliminal undercurrent pervading the whole market atmosphere. Great captures of some truly fantastic raiment, Harry. That big fellow in the last one looks like Henry the VIII (in denim, which must have been incredibly hot and uncomfortable!) And next time I need a wooden sword or ye olde teeshirt I know where to go. I do love seeing the costumes best of all, I think, and is that a tiny spiderman in the first shot? LOL! As an aside, I think it would be sad not to hear the participants having a go at each other in dialect, that was my favourite part of the Ren Faires I went to years ago.

a series that creates in me a big surprise ... stalls selling trinkets, clothes, fake equipment knights costumes, jewelry, fair "Flea" for a commerce that attracts many customers I hope but ... a party on the Renaissance is 'impaired' by the trade added, even if it is done in period costume! I am excited by your generous report, but am disappointed by all these in-hand ... shame! (do not worry, this is just my perception of things!)

A fantastic series of interesting photos in top quality. It's really fun to watch. I've made a couple of thoughts on this event: The Renaissance period in Europe was mainly the 15th and 16th centuries, at the time when Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. So the Renaissance never happened in America. Nevertheless, they organize a big commercial event, probably mainly to make money. But there are also here in Germany Wild West clubs and events, although the Wild West has never happened here. The main thing is it's fun.

claude 19's comment is well taken; but we should remember that people made their livelihood by selling wares wherever they went, back then, and the streets of those cities were lined with concession stands and wares of every kind and sellers barking---like the lady in the 2d shot---to get your attention. City streets could look like one vast street fair, because that's how people survived. And, for sure, conniving, tricks, lying, haggling, you name it, was everywhere. Like Hendesse says, they have Wild West clubs and the Wild West never happened in Germany, so it's so natural for Americans to have Renaissance fairs. (Speaking of the Wild West in Deutschland, we saw a Western in German class, years ago, to see what an American genre film would look like, dubbed into German. In one of the first scenes, an Indian chief rode up to some pioneers, raised his hand, and said: "Wie gehts!!!" A real culture shock, lol.) ANYWAY...this is a burst of color, forms, textures, collisions, cultural juxtapositions, and a lot of visual giddiness, play and dance. The montage is a big street party. It's nice that you open with a more open shot, and then dive into the intensity. And that first shot has t-shirts---a really not-Renaissance phenomenon, lol! I know it's commercial and probably crass, but the sight of t-shirts on sale at a Renaissance fest is just great street photography. And yeah, I think that kid IS spiderman. A very nice shot. The 2d is awash with verticals, and that shouting lady, more fine work. The 3d has great counterpoint with a large and thin buyer, and a smiling guy who looks like he brews a mean beer on the side. (And has been a pirate for the last 30 years.) The 4th is a wabagoon collision of gowns and designs and all kinds of contrasting colors---would've made the cover of a Ralph Lauren catalog in 1560. And the last is a really sweet capture of two people making a sale, with the backs of others in the background, and that front guy---yes---looking a little like Henry VIII (Denise), only in denim. ("Zounds---bring me the royal Denim, knaves! I want to sweat!!!") Yes, that's gotta be warm! And the shot is framed by the inward-leaning of the two main characters. A real festival of shots, packed, teeming, eye assaulting, and, like the rest of this series, with a number of very human moments and contrasts. I'm almost at an hour and 45 minutes, so I have to stop now, but this is a great place to end. Next time I'll pick up where I left off, earlier. And if I skipped two shots in this sequence, it's because I'd already commented on them before. Terrific work as always. A real cornucopia of street fair activity.
