Description

Iceland, with a population of 326,000, is one of the most heavily wired countries in the world. It seems almost everyone has a cellphone. There is a practical reason for this. A few statistics will help to make the point; Iceland’s landmass covers an area of 40,000 square miles (103,000 square km) The population of Iceland is concentrated in four cities: Metropolitan Reykjavik = 208,710 in 777 km2 (300 sq mi) Akureyri = 17,754 in 125 km2 (48.26 sq mi) Hafnarfjörður = 26,099 in 143 km2 (56.76 sq mi) Kópavogur = 31,726 in 83.72 km2 (32.32 sq mi) Total: = 284,289 in 1128.72 km2 (437.34 sq mi) These cities cover 1.1% of the land area of Iceland. This leaves 41,711 people living in the other 98.9% of the country or a density of 1 person per square mile. By contrast: Kentucky = 40,409 sq miles (104,659 km²) 4,339,367 population 101.7 people/sq mile Ireland = 32,595 sq miles (84,421 km²) 4,589,000 population 168/sq mile England (less Scotland & Wales) = 50,346 sq miles (130,395 km²) 50,100,000 population 419/sq mile If your vehicle brakes down it can be a long walk home. Most of the time we were the only ones on the road.

The Iranian-American Ali is a professional photographer and so, when most of our group were standing together with their point and shoot cameras or I-phones, he would wander off in search of different views. Sometimes he would make us wait while he finished his shooting but we never left him behind.

You do make it hard to pick what to comment on. Your pictures of Iceland are absolutely wonderful! I agree with Tara. Superb shot! I love the composition of a single person and a road that snakes like a black ribbon across the landscape. Then there is the fantastic color and lighting, with blue-white sparkling snow and a soft tangerine sky! This is absolutely beautiful! Though I haven't been around to comment, I am really enjoying your Iceland series. I always so enjoy seeing and reading about your travels. (The twins are adorable.)
