Description
After World War II the population of Iceland began to move into the cities. Since 1980 this has accelerated. The sons and daughters of farmers and sheep herders and fisher folk find life easier in Reykjavik and there are more opportunities for social interaction.
Our driver was crusty old man with a sly sense of humor who went by the single name of Aðalsteinn. He had been a farmer as a younger man but had moved to the capital and become a tour bus driver. Our tour guide had a similar story. She had grown up on a farm, married and given birth to two children. After a divorce she took her children to Reykjavik. She told us to call her Hólm since no one would be able to pronounce her full name. Her full name is Hólmfríður Ran Sigvaldadóttir. And, yes, I learned to pronounce it much to her surprise.
Now that the people have left much of Iceland remains spectacular and untouched. This is sometimes referred to in America as One Big Empty.
