I'm back to commenting today...
An experiment:
These are 3 shots from my point and shoot: But, as it has mediocre resolution and a so-so sensor, when you extract shots like these, you get pixelization.
Rather than toss them, I decided to "correct" them to whatever degree I could, without destroying the original.
So these are imperfect.
I hope I got an "essence" though...
Please zoom---you'll see details that way.
Thanks for viewing!
Two more to come...

stunning shot, if Vue could achieve something close to this I'd upgrade, but it can't alas, so down to you boys with the cameras to show us what we are missing :)

Wonderful ! What's that Barn Owl doing in that wave?
MrsRatbag
LOL @ Andrea! I didn't see the owl until she mentioned it, now I can't unsee it... Still, there is a wonderful essence of water action in this shot. It's that pixellation and loss of definition that finally got me off the point and shoot and on to the more bulky and heavy DSLR. I rue the increased weight, but don't miss the limitations. On to the next in your series...

Ah, a glimpse out of the past? I'm interested in what corrections you made. I agree there is some pixilation, blurring and blown out areas. But based upon experience with my earlier cameras I know there is only so much you can technically correct when you have those conditions. While I'm always trying to boost sharpness, a lot of what you do by way of artful postwork (high key, color adjustments, blending, bumping up or down saturation, etc., etc.) tells me that sometimes the last thing you may want is sharpness. Am I right? The original subject above is quite spectacular. I can't tell what this wave is crashing into but the effect is unlike anything I've ever seen except from a distance at the mouth of the Columbia River where the outflowing river currents smack into incoming ocean waves. I like the light around the wave and the darkness of all the background. One word description: IMPACTFUL. Three word reaction: I like it! P.S. You absolutely captured the essence.

Well, I zoomed in on this imperfect photo, and in all candor, I really didn't detect anything that imperfect about it; granted, a wee bit of barely detectable noise, but that was about it. I think it came out spectacularly fine, especially in that explosive visual impact of the wave releasing its awesome power upon its immediate area, Mark. And, I hate to admit it, but I found Andrea's comment most whimsical. I still have some catching up to do, so please bear with me in re my short comments.

Oh, it is a grand explosion of foam, turbulent and powerful, and in the center I see a heart opening, as if leading to a mysterious and peaceful place. A lovely shot.

Mark, this is a simply marvelous capture that truly did brighten my day. I think you did a splendid job of correcting it through the use of filters, and I can tell by the responses everyone enjoyed it. Dramatic captures like this one definitely stick with you.
