Description

When you are far away I dream of the horizon And words fail me And of course I know You are with me With me You, my moon Are with me My sun You are here with me With me With me. Time to say goodbye To places I've never seen Or experienced with you Now I shall I'll sail with you upon ships Across the sea Seas that exist no more. Time To Say Goodbye (Con te Partiro) lyrics by Lucio Quarantotto and Frank Peterson It is time to say goodbye to my beloved Aunt Athena, who lived a passionate and creative life for 96 years. Athena was an accomplished artist, painting with oils and watercolors. She also made little dioramas, decorating her apartment with all these magical scenes. She also composed her own songs on the piano, and wrote musical plays. She was always creating something, even in her 90's. She lived in Chicago with all my other Greek relatives. I have such fond memories of visiting the family as a child, and of being embraced by all my aunts who either wanted to kiss me or feed me. I remember these beautiful oriental watercolors of Geisha woman Athena had painted and my mom hung them in our home. I think this was my first inspiration for doing art. Athena outlived her brother and two sisters, and four husbands. Her last husband was an opera singer, and she always loved this song (Time To Say Goodbye) that was made famous by Andrea Bocelli. I believe her creativity kept her healthy and independent until the last few months of her amazing life. She was a grand inspiration and even grander lady. I loved her with all my heart and I'm so grateful to have had her in my life. Credits: Created in Photoshop, using rose reference and painting techniques. The rose in this artwork is called Botticelli, and comes from another passionate and spiritual woman who has a garden in France filled with over 800 varieties of roses. I'm so sorry for your loss Carol. But yet, it sounds like she enriched the lives of those around her and led a very full and rich life herself.

It's hard to find words for the tranquility and angelic bow of protection, gratitude and love this image evokes. The rose is tilted as if bowing to us and to the universe; to life. And your background---so often (with your flowers and plants) teeming with pulsing forms and textures, and lights mingled with deep caverns, and the feeling that, below the bottom of your image, the center of the soul rests---is graced with simplicity, here, as if all the passionate pulsations have no need to show themselves because Athena carries them inside her now; and her bow offers them to the world. The universe has gone calm for her, through ocean-waves of peace and acceptance. And your colors---a great colorist knows intuitively what colors to use to express deep emotions; and those colors are often impossible to explain. Your colors are those colors. Your peach/red/pinkish orange/slightly-blue-tinged hue, morphing through the piece like a deep soulful cloud, is just the right hue for surrender, farewell, deep acceptance and birth. (From "mourning into morning," or, in the Jewish words, from darkness into light). It's a deep hue-family, it's gentle, it's non-foreboding, it's quiet and it's very loving. And you have a slight halo around the rose which, to me, is a gentle intimation of the universe giving her a crown. And a bird out in the distance, intimating a deep journey, with beautiful clouds along the horizon (with light-tinged tops) like the mists that rise up to honor one; and a gentle ocean---or Lake Michigan (since she lived in Chicago, off that mythical lake), and the spray at bottom above waves or clouds that couch the waters in embrace. Above all, the rose has your usual veins and rivers of life, tinging your peach/orange hues with purples and blues. The petals fold and unfold gently, without the drama and explosiveness that some of your roses have---this rose is all about embrace and Offering, not great drama. And the rose dissolves along the skyline, as if it were surrendering itself to the infinite---but gently so. From what I know of Athena, her wholly assured heart is all over this rose, in the way it surrenders itself without any to-do. I can't think of a more fitting image for the mountain that was your aunt, or for the gentility that filled in her soul. The beauty she leaves behind sits, here, like an aura across Lake Michigan, bowing like a ballet dancer giving her final offering, having given a lifetime of dance and now bringing her dance to mystical half-visible shores...she goes on her way, having offered you the jewels of her heart; that's what this feels like to me. And I'd think that when you have moments of pain and yearning (as we all do), you can refer back to this image to hear your heart tell you "she's with you always"...at the heart of this image are her hands guiding you, just as she did in her life. Beautiful and perfect, Carol, delicate, offering, and leaving quiet in its wake. A beautiful bow of love for your 'goddess of wisdom' (her namesake). Deeply moving.

Mark, now I am at a loss for the right words to express how your words have touched my heart, moving me to tears. Somehow you know Athena, you see her beauty, feel her love, and most of all understand her spirit that truly filled the Universe. She was indeed a woman who surrendered herself to all the challenges and wonders of life with all her heart and very little 'to do'. Her memory is like this rose to me, forever blooming and forever beautiful. And now, your words have made the memories even more beautiful and when I am missing her the most I will return to this image, feel her loving spirit and light, and yours, too, and smile.
