Description
Cader Idris is a mountain in Gwynedd, Wales, at the Southern end of the Snowdonia National Park, just outside Dolgellau. The peak is one of the most popular in Wales for walkers and hikers. The North face ( in the photo ) is composed largely of Ordovician igneous rock and shows classic signs of glacial erosion.
The most common explanation of the name is based on the fact that 'Cadair' means chair in Welsh. Cadair Idris would thus be taken as ' the chair of Idris'. Idris was a giant, who was said to have used the mountain as an armchair to gaze at the stars.
A more likely explanation may refer to Idris ap Gwyddno, a 7th century prince of Meirionnydd, who won a battle against Irish invaders on the mountain.
Although typically the name is spelt Cadair Idris on current maps, it is usually referred to as Cader Idris locally, both in Welsh and English........
As I said in my previous post, the cottage we stayed at was in the shadow of Cader Idris. It was not visible from the garden though due to trees, I had to walk, oh at least twenty yards down the lane to get this picture.....the lengths we go to to get that all important angle....well I mean, it was uphill coming back :-)

Fabulous view! It kills my soul to know the lengths you had to go to to get this extraordinary shot. And after that heroic trek to the view spot, having to trudge back UPHILL! (GASP) You are a true photojournalist and all around intrepid traveler. :-) I really do envy you the trip.

Wonderful image Neil! Nature and Landscape photography can be extremely grueling at times, I'm glad you were up to the task! It's a tough, thankless job, but someone has to do it! lol
