Description

Assembled; Olympus Evolt E-3, Olympus 2.0X teleconverter, Sigma "Bigma" 50-500 mm zoom lens, and a very nice Manfrotto tripod. Total actual focal length is 1000 mm. As shown, I take Moon shots. For the "IKE" shots I used this rig hand held sans tripod (of course!). I am very pleased with the rigs performance as well as my arms!

with aprox 5 - 6 kg gear you need a good tripod for moon shots :)

Nice setup I have three Telescopes the largest being 355.6mm but I don't do astrophotography, Just a deep space visual observer. You should get some amazing captures with that.

You know you're a maniac when you mount your camera to the lens instead of the other way around!

Nice setup!! That Olympus Evolt E-3 is a micro 4/3 right. That has a crop factor of X2.0, making your lens setup a total 35mm equivalent of 2000mm. Am I right? When I get serious, I get out the big glass, My Celestron 2800mm!! With my T2i attached, APS-C X1.6 crop factor, it becomes a 4480mm (35mm equivalent). I'll be building a permanent home for it in the near future. The setup weighs about 250lbs., it's not exactly portable!! Now having buyers remorse!!!!

Do you have pics of your rig posted? I'd love to see that!

The E-3 is a full 4/3 format, not Micro. The two do not interchange lenses though the sensor elements are close to the same. E-3 is a veritable tank, magnesium body, plastic and rubber covering, splash proof. I doubt seriously Olympus will continue support of the full 4/3 system.

@SnowCrow1 - The E-3 is a full 4/3 mount, as are all my bodies. E-510 and E-5 now. Yes, the total focal length is 1000 mm, and in 35mm equivalent it is 2000mm. It should be a more enjoyable experience to use the E-5, as it has Live View and locks the mirror up. Easier to track Luna!
