Description

Jackson Square New Orleans, Louisiana I took a lot of pictures when we were in New Orleans one afternoon in March. When we left the house, I didn't think about how visible I was going to be! I had on a floppy black hat (the southern sun is so bright I can't see my viewfinder unless I have a shade brim), a bright red shirt, and was carrying a big camera. How conspicuous can one person be? I suppose I could have carried a neon sign that said, "Tourist Photographer," but honestly ... that would have been gilding the lily. I mostly take pictures of architecture when I'm in a big city, but the people in Jackson Square were too interesting to pass up. I believe three different people in this picture clocked me. What interested me most was the conversation between the man on the bicycle and the man in the dark jacket. The overblown highlights were intentional, btw, for those of you who get fussed about such things. My evil plan in postworking this image was to draw attention to that animated conversation while still maintaining a sense of context.

This is such an intersting picture, Tara, and you could write a short story just using these characters . Did Bill get a photo of you in your subtle outfit, I wonder?

I love those few places left that allow the enterprising entrepreneur to present the fruits of creativity. I used to do sidewalk art until the police tried to arrest me. Sigh. Art, a shunned trade... now art is a poster from Walmart with some dogs playing poker.

In addition to the three people who spotted you, I think the guy in the painting on the right (with the hat) had his eye on you too...

I can just hear the guy on the bench saying to his wife, "Martha, look at the lady with the big "TOURIST PHOTOGRAPHER" sign floating over her head..." LOL! I really enjoy photos like this... They make me want to add speech bubbles and my own interpretations of the conversations. The two guys having a conversation in the background are priceless... Wonderful capture, Tara!

The woman in the lower right looks a little bemused. In addition to the man in the blue hat there is also the trio at top just right of center. Looks like you drew a lot of attention.

How great that you got to go there! Jackson Square is such a great place and all of the French Quarter is the perfect place for people watching! We loved it there and hope you did, too. Nice shot here. :)
