Description
After a couple of days at Yellowstone, we were disappointed that we hadn't seen any grizzly bears. One of the park rangers recommended that we go to a particular overlook in an area called Hayden Valley late in the day to optimize our chances of spotting one. When we got there, there were several men with high powered spotting scopes on tripods scouring the landscape & a small crowd behind them. After a few minutes, one of them spotted a grizzly in the distance. They were all very generous with their scopes & allowed us to share the view. We watched him foraging for a while & then a herd of elk came thundering through. The grizzly followed the elk, hoping to snag one of their young calves. Unfortunately, at this point, they disappeared from view behind a gully, so I don't know how the drama played out. Even my 60x zoom was insufficient to get any decent shots of the bear, though I did get some shots of the elk herd & will see if any are worth posting.
Anyway, while the crowd was looking out in the direction where the grizzly was spotted, directly behind us was a hill where a few bison were grazing & I went up there & was able to get this shot of a couple of them against the sunset. Later on, at Glacier National Park, I finally got a shot at a grizzly from a somewhat shorter distance, but on this day, I was happy to get this shot of the bison...
Please zoom.

Here in Oklahoma we have the privilege of viewing Bison at the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, I go there often and never get tired of watching the buffalo roam the refuge in there slow easy gate. It's like getting to glance back in history. Beautiful capture and beautiful sunset to use as a backdrop!

As long as my jaw was already on the floor in amazement over this perfectly composed photograph, I turned the computer screen around so Bill could see it too. He regained speech first and said, "Wow ... that's a painting." Indeed. If I'd seen this photograph out on the internet somewhere, not knowing the source, I would say it was faked. Since it's yours, though, I know better. This is just stunning, Claude. Gorgeous image!
