Description

Captured 4/27/14, at the beautiful Renaissance Faire, held at the beautiful Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, in semi beautiful Irwindale, California. I was just roaming around looking for photo targets of opportunity, in essence participants and things at the Faire; my attention so riveted towards my subject matter that in this instance I didn't notice the anomaly at the far right of this pic until I opened it on the computer for postwork duty. What sorcery or shenanigans is this? That is either a joke or a reincarnation of the headless horseman. What an enigma. Don't want to be recognized, eh? When taking photos, the camera sees all but I don't see all. Ciao, baby.

A headless security guard, I guess...the subject of the photo is quite intriguing, with a few hints that he's another steampunker...great capture, Harry, with all your usual skill!

Btw Harry, I didn't come back yesterday as I said I would, because my father's condominium in florida finally got a contract-of-sale, and I was on the phone and doing preparations all day for a trip down there in the coming few weeks. (I've waited forever for this. The money's not big, but it's been such an expense and liability, I'm happy to sell it even at a low price.) So after 2 comments in a gallery I've not been to in weeks, I got the call, and headed out immediately. To see a lawyer, speak with my sister, etc. I hope it goes through after inspection...Anyway, that's the reason for the gap. I wanted to do this image partly because it was your 100th Faire upload, which is a milestone in itself. I can't believe how many vivid shots you got from one shoot. Even National Geographic photographers don't reach that percentage. It's been a real treat, and your postwork on these visually busy and demanding shots has been exemplary. It's been a great carnival. Going back 100 days? That's over 3 months. I don't know when you started, but it's been wonderful to see what you'll post next. If the headless horseman's hat were on a real person (on the right), it would be even stranger. But even on a mannequin---if it's a person, he's got unbelievably smooth arms!---it's still strange, but more understandable, given that there are hats on other costumes behind. In any case, the non-living presence makes the headless horseman even more strange and macabre. And he somehow fits with the center guy: Because that center guy has a stare of semi-willingness and semi guardedness---a slightly studying suspicious gaze, and a fine spontaneous human capture. His face alone is worth the shot. But then he's got what looks like fake WWI flying goggles on his top hat (!!! what are those???); he's got what looks like two little lenses-on-sticks on top of one goggle-lens---was he an eye specialist from the Renaissance? And he's got what looks like two tools on the side of the rim. Most fascinating details. Plus what looks like two stately human figures dangling on his chest. Like Wedgwood figures. But they also could be bones. Or sacks of something. Fascinating. One of your most enigmatic portraits, very rich, and surrounded by human-less costumes. Fine work, and worthy of number 100. What an amazing mix of presences...a very rich street capture.
