Description

Hughes House Port Orford, Oregon Although these items are all used in the preparation and service of food (except perhaps for the flower pot on the left), they're opposites in their function and intention. Practical kitchen implements vs. fancy silver serving dishes. The glass churn, the jug, and the tea kettle would never make it to the dining room table in a formal household, and the silver would only be used for service, never storage or preparation. This was a display in a house that is now a museum, and these items probably never lived so close together when the kitchen staff was cooking for farmhands and owners every day! I would bet the cook was quite a bit more organized than this arrangement might indicate.

Sometimes I think it would do us all well to go back to family dinners. The kind where everyone sat down together, talked about the day and just spent time with each other. I remember when mom would get out the good china for guest or just special meals. It always made me feel a little more grown up and special. Mom taught me they formal did not have to be "stuffy". Beautiful capture of past times.

Now you've got me feeling sorry for the plain utensils. They do all the work and then hand it off to the good looking ones who take center stage and shine. A lot like people. Well seen and captured.

Nice shot, Tara, but not really opposites. The opposite of food preparation utensils would be utensils that break prepared food down to their original components & the opposite of fancy serving dishes would be plain dishes used to remove food from the table. Or am I being too literal?

there should be a sign stating that this is a display of the utensils and not shown in their proper place in the house Great capture

An interesting study in contrasting shapes and finishes, to be sure. Wonderful lighting, and a great shot, Tara!

I have used those items, or similar, before. My grandmother and great-grandmother had those things in their kitchens. I even remember the old washer with the ringer on top of it that could take your hand off if you weren't careful. Wonderful capture.

It's almost alarming how many of those seem familiar.

The light is the first thing that grabbed me, and then the shapes and the colors. I love the contrasts, the plain and fancy sharing a shelf--almost like a socio-political statement, though I'm also wondering what purpose the flower pot served. I happen to know of a few kitchens--okay, they're imaginary--in which no meal is complete without the assistance of a flowerpot. I love the thing with a spigot on it. Though it's a bit small, I'd bet that it would be a great dispenser for a particular Ukrainian cleaning lady's aggressive, fermented tea stuff.

But they all look great lined up like that; it would never occur to me that they didn't belong together, but then I've never spent much time in formal surroundings. Wonderful capture, and I like the monotone feeling!

Hi dear Tara, Dis goed om jou te zien ook !!!!! I'm so impressed by this soft yellows on your picture. Also the different forms, glow and the light are such harmonious to me. This display could go live and talk to you. The method of capture is so alive, literally a luminary from a photo. :)
