Description

When one goes out hunting, you try to keep the food load light yet nutritious. the military has contracted with some great companies who have changed the idea of what to eat on the field. these MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) are a prime example of the contractors listening to the military. in doing so, they have come out with a very high-quality menu that, in my opinion, rivals some restaurants and meals you find in the stores. the other great option is that they use flameless heating system to cool the meals - Those heaters consist of a chemical in a pouch that produces heat when it is exposed to water. To use the heater, you add water to the pouch and then insert the sealed MRE and your food cooks with the heat produced by the chemical reaction in about ten minutes. the rock is an option to keep the system contained. these meals are top quality in taste and I will not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to my friends. and yes! I've had the old C-rats so I speak with some experience. the other great thing is that the meals weigh very little for the calorie content.

Sounds better than the freeze-dried dinners they sell for backpacking. Thanks Mike - I'll have to try it!

Sounds like amazing technology! Glad the soldiers are finally being given something edible for all they do for the rest of us! Cool photo, Mike!

Sounds like the ideal food for a long trip Mikey. Not heard of these before, but they sound like just the ticket. The heating system intrigues me also.

I remember C-rations. (and still have some P-38's and P-28's) You use the P-38 to open the can of spagetti, but you don't take the lid off, then you tear the flaps off the little box it comes in, put the can of spagettii inside the box and stuff the torn up flaps around the can. Then you light the box on fire and when it's done burning--dinner! Oh, but then it's time for desert; mix the coffee creamer and the sugar together and carefully use a lighter to burn the outside paper away from the inner foil--and you got a Ranger Cookie. These young whipper-snappers got it way too easy. But, I suppose that's what the K-Ration generation said. And before that, you had to hunt and cook it yourself. But no matter, you got whiskey rations twice a day and that made up for the trouble. Oh but for the good old days of the elite Balloon Corps and marching with your Regiment all day.

Mike, first of all let me say thank you for posting this presentation as this is about the coolest thing I've ever seen. i had some friends that let me try the old style MRE's long ago and they were barely edible. This is also the first time anyone ever told me about this flameless heating option, and I am eager to learn more.

So, putting the pizza on the air filter and holding it down with the hood of the jeep while heading to the field is no longer in vogue? Lol! Great description. So I can get rid of the 2nd gen C-Rats behind the truck seat? Cool!

Cool info I never knew anything about chemical cooking. I do remember when I first left home as a teen and had a bad budgeted week and had to have home made cream of onion soup for three or four days in a roll until the Friday pay day came around, I also seem to have managed not to had it since, lol.
