Life in flux. So, I was looking with passionate interest for people who were interested in making realistic materials - called shaders - for Poser mesh. That interest had shifted to making dynamic cloth for Poser, but has since moved further afield: to Blender3D. And creating scenes in Poser for Cycles.
Exciting times!!
How can it be the best things in life are free? Blender 2.63a with Cycles is just the most amazing programme, evah! How can this be free? Well, what I'm typing in: Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu 12.04) is also free. Solid, stable, never any issues, finds new devices without me having to do anything... how can this be free?
These are exciting times indeed, and they don't cost money. They cost time and imagination and dedication and a desire to learn. And they are free.
Gotta love it!

I really love this portrait. It's just so peaceful. And the hair did come out beautifully. It sounds like you have the same problem I do, though in a different direction. I use the same hair shader everywhere, but I do have to optimize it for the hair I'm using. I don't find displacement or bump that important, but I do find SSS, transparency, and textures very mesh and mapping specific in ways that determine how I have to set up my shader.

A very sensitive and skilfully crafted work of portraiture. The shader work perfectly accentuates the hair texture, and brings the character to life. I always have a challenge here on specular and often end up adding a little postwork to overcome the shortcomings. Her expression is subtle and pensive, yet hints at some developing conflict, as perhaps framed by the dark clouds in the background. Beautiful lighting work on skin and cloth really make this character really stand out, in further testimony to the skills applied in creating this image. A first class render!!!
