Description

Geisha on a box, captured 12/25/14, very early morning, about .30 of a mile from my heavenly haven. In an effort to pretty up the area, the City Hall administration has commissioned, or held a contest for, young artists to do their artistic thing, using city property as their canvas, this one in particular probably a signal system utility box, judging from its location near the intersection. So far, this is the only art work in relation to the project that I've encountered. I would have snapped the other side of the box, but that section was too dark at the time. Maybe some day in the future, when there is better illumination. Have a significantly nice day.

That's a wonderful piece of public art; they have some painted around here too, but it's just run of the mill flowers and trees and that sort of thing, at least so far. Excellent captures, Harry, and I look forward to your getting the backside photographed sometime!

Well, I've only done 2 images in half an hour, but in fairness the last one was 4 images in one, so at least I have an excuse. I was stunned by this when it went up, because it's a great idea, because it's painted very well for street art, and because your photograph is very vivid and clear, esp with the difficult low light of that hour. I like that you got the rough texture of the box, the cracks and pock marks, etc. And the strange feeling that, out of a typical urban object, a painting arises. The painting takes over once we're 'in' it. The top shot, of course, is a frontal shot of one side, with all the detail mentioned above. But the bottom shot puts it in context more: The shadow on one side, the long shadow it casts behind it, the odd and very pleasing juxtaposition of that colored curb and the similarly colored slatted wall behind. And the brick wall with that stark plaster wall on top of it: an abstract of street shapes and forms. And we get to see the side of the box too. Love the contrasts and angles...Really fine work with a difficult subject. And btw, I've seen those colored curbs in others of your shots; and we don't have ANYTHING like that here. That must be an LA thing, and I really like it. And I always like your capture of early morning LA light. Nothing like it in Chicago...
