Description
Greetings Folks,
First up, sorry for not being around problems here, will catch up from tomorrow onward..
Now the British Aerospace Sea Harrier FA2, master of the skies over the Falklands.. Known as 'Shar' by its crews and ground staff.
The story that goes with the Battle Of the Falklands is of course well known, only 28 Sea Harriers were ever on theatre and none were lost in combat, only two were lost to ground fire and two lost on CAP patrol..
A total of 20 aircraft were shot down by Harriers in Air to Air combat, for no losses..
The were up against MIrages, Dagger jets and of course Skyhawks, (unfortunately easy meat).
Harriers were much more manoeuvrable than fast jets.. Tactics such as the 'Viff' (Vectored in Forward Flight) using the nozzles normally used for vertical flight for braking and other directions proved decisive in dogfights.. Harriers also used the latest AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles and Blur Fox Radar, way better than their opponents..
'I counted them all out, and I counted them all back.', Brian Hanrahan, BBC reporter, on board HMS Hermes following the first Harrier mission during the Falklands War..
They were also flown during the Bosnian War and Gulf War..
This was taken at RAF Cottesmore Family Day, (I had a pass).. Access to all areas! Now of course, along with the Harriers, closed!
Enjoy
Rob
P.S. Sorry for the scattergun write up today..

Must confess I still struggle to comprehend WHY they ever scrapped this.....bloody politicians and moneymen they want shooting..... Great photo, and the write up is fine! what more need be known, besides that's what Google is for.

I'm with Neil on this one. This is one hell of an aircraft but as always short term thinking by politicians is the cause of most of the problems. We have a general election coming up so once again all the promises are made only to be broken down the line. Great post Rob.

Great job, Rob! I'm with Neil, too. Great write-up. I remember that war only all too well. And I followed every raid as best I could (being stuck in pro-Argie dictatorship, anti-UK Sweden). I also have 2 books about the war. I recall buying the first Airfix model of the Harrier just after it came on the market. Impressive. Wish I had had your photo as a painting guide! Glad to see more of this bird if you have more photos of it! Keep up the good work! :-) Now, where's that 6 on the ratings?
