Description
One of the benefits of having a friend who is the wife of a successful business man is that, occasionally, that business man must travel out of town. When that happens it is possible that a ticket for an event becomes available. And so it happened that, right after New Year’s Day, my friend Li called and asked if I would like to attend a performance of the Strauss Symphony of America at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles.
For twenty-two years my mother and I had season tickets to the Ahmanson Theatre. Four times a year we would brave the freeway traffic to attend a play. After she passed away I could find no reason to make that trip. I had not been to the downtown area for thirteen years so I arrived early to do some exploring.
The image below is of the Far East Chop Suey Chinese restaurant. It has been located in the same building for over seventy years. I believe the sign may be original as well as some of the waiters. But even this venerable institution cannot resist the juggernaut that is Hello Kitty.

We , well I, have not noticed too much of her here. Maybe I don't go shopping enough. Lucky you with the concert: I went to a Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra concert last Saturday of ballet music and my companion and I were amused and distracted by the fact that the conductor was a dead ringer for our postman! I do like the photo, even though it worries me that the fire escape ends rather distressingly short of the ground.

I won't admit to owning a Hello Kitty notebook, and actually viewing it as a prized possession. Nope. I'm not admitting that at all, though I've photographed it on numerous occasions. I won't admit to liking Hello Kitty when I first discovered that dangerously cute critter; it was at the time when I was studying Japanese and learning of the Japanese interest in the sound of English, regardless of any sense or nonsense those sounds may possess. Ah...the wonders of a kitchen cleaner called "Delicious Time" or a current pop-group called "Crispy Park." I'm not going to admit that Crispy Park is rather good, in that Japanese sort of way that both completely derails and cunningly re-contextualizes modern pop music. I will say that I love this image, and it sounds like you had an enjoyable time. I've not been to a symphony performance in quite a while, and that needs to change. I love these sorts of sights. So much of that sign screams authenticity, right down to the authentically-not-so-Chinese invention of Chop Suey; it fits the architecture, the mentality of the architecture, and everything else associated with that building and the history of its neighborhood. I love such places, and as for Andrea's distress: there's a ladder that provides a really fun ride down if you get on it before lowering it: just be careful as it'll remove your fingers rather efficiently if you hold on to the wrong place.

Oh, and I love the multicultural felines. There's the Japanese Hello Kitty, and one of those Chinese cats that waves at you! I love it!
