all your poems are beautiful, but this one is particularly penetrating and beautiful, asking us to see our inner selves in the amazing complexity and deep flow of the swan. Beautifully written. Your image is a big zoom-in to the deep nature of the swan's gaze, and of his plumage---a plumage seen only around the head, but giving a deep glimpse into how effulgent it is. It's like a radiating crown or a halo---and you know, I'm sure, how often halo-like configurations accompany the great spiritual paintings of so many traditions. They take many forms, but they're all about light emanating around the place of knowing and seeing (the head). This plumage is like one of those big halos, and you set it off with an uncharacteristic pure black background. By "uncharacteristic," I mean that you may use black backgrounds, but you don't use them often, at least in this gallery; and it's perfect for the big white universe of the swan itself. (It also harmonizes with the striking blacks of the swan's face and beak.) Your strokes are very energized, pulsing in many spots as in the beak, which flows like small flames. And the strokes in the feathers are big energy-strokes, almost like the veins in leaves. With his head looking down, he appears to be lowering his gaze so he can see us directly. And while there's something fierce about this gaze---because of how much he shows of his powerful bill---there's also something very surrendering about it, as if he's bowing to us. And though his eyes are small, they're very concentrated here, and feel penetrating. This is a stunning piece, Carol, a surprising portrait of the swan, because of its truncated "putting us right in the middle" pov---ie, you didn't portray its long famous neck or the grace of its whole body floating upon the water: You gave us, instead, an intense closeup. But it feels like it encompasses the whole world. You may know---and I may have said it elsewhere to you---that the swan is a symbol of enlightenment in the East, in part because of its long graceful neck (grace and balance and seeking all in one); but also because of its slow graceful movements upon the water, its sweep. It's called "hamsa" in India; and a prime sage is called "paramahamsa"---pararmount swan. (The "parama" is related, in Sanskrit, to our word "paramount".) There's a famous legend that the swan is the only animal who can drink the milk out of a mixture of milk and water---meaning it has the ability to extract wisdom and light from anything. Something about the powerful vertical 'shaft' of your image suggests that this swan could penetrate anything, and won't stop until it finds the truth. A powerful evocation of a grace-filled bird. A beautiful painting.
