a very painterly image, very oil-like, and very powerful too. As you know, the ancient Hindus said the Lotus was the perfect symbol for human beings because it had its roots in the swamp but its petals pointing to heaven. (from darkness to light, as you write---which is one of the key phrases for passover too, which was last weekend.) Your "darkness" here is a ganglia of under-earth roots, looking almost like pressed flowers in their bold outlines and splayed and flattened forms. It's a beautiful "ground," as much spirit as substance; and veiny and sinewy like the lines from which life comes. I love that the ground here is filled with sinewy life, rather than something solid and unmoving (and I'm aware that lotuses grow in water, so you may have meant this to look underwater-y as well as like a substratum). And you have light down there too, which is significant---it's not just darkness. Above the green leaves---painted very sensually---you have those bold flowers, with very strong oil-like lines. And light takes them over, with a blast right above them, with those radiating rays to the sky. It looks like the petals above the flowers are almost mountains in a Chinese landscape---only they're petals. And they too are dissolved by this blasting light. It's a powerful evocation of the power of the lotus. And your flame-like lines give it all a very passionate pulse. Beautiful. Kind of like a painting of the power of all 7 chakras in one image. More soulful, beautiful work from you, Carol. A very cosmic lotus...
