Description

Captured 4/15/15 @ 8:56 am, not at the beautiful Pavilion of Wings at the beautiful Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, but at the front gate of my usually congenial condominium complex. What a surprise this was. Every ten thousand years or so, we do get a visit from an errant butterfly, this one a relatively small Monarch. And I was there to record it. Auf wiedersehen.

A lovely capture of this monarch; I haven't seen one of them in so many years I can't remember when the last one happened. Excellent colour, texture and light control Harry!

When this went up, I looked up monarch butterflies on google, and found that they're considered endangered. Here's a quote from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: "Since 1990, about 970 million have vanished." That might explain their rarity. But that's besides the point---the shot is so gritty and wonderfully grainy on the right, and bokeh'd on the left; and the butterfly, in this environment, stands out but also blends-in. It's a very powerful piece of natural capture, as if the butterfly were posing in a studio to get this effect. The confluence of all those leaves---and such different colors and shapes (with a twig in there)---makes this look like a construction made by an artist. Terrific seeing, and such strong textures and light---it's almost flat in spots, from the light, as if the monarch weren't 3 dimensional. Of course, the butterfly is beautiful, and you caught it with great fidelity to its details. But the overall composition is splendid. A terrific day's uploads---three great shots! Another fav.
