Description

A massive door at the castle in Beynac, which was constructed in the 12th century. This is a rework of a photo I originally posted a few years ago...

They really need to do something about that black mold! Nice photo though.

with andrea, I love what you've done to it---which, for me, means you've let all its languages speak clearly, ie, the grime, the mold (blue) on the door, the yellowing on the door's arch, the greened (molded I presume) walkway in front of the door, and including the wall on the left (hard to ignore, I realize, but you could've cropped it out) to make it feel cloistered, hemmed in, through the delineation of the bricks where they're not rubbed away by age or erosion, etc. You caught the feel of these foreboding entrances. Gothic---in cathedrals---was supposed to open walls into air and sinew, allowing "the light of heaven" to pour through. But on castles like this, it has a more sinister, enclosed feeling, and that arch seems to point not so much to heaven (which was part of its aesthetic, originally), as to some dark place above---literally and figuratively. This feels gothic in that sense, in the popular sense, as in "gothic novels" and such. But without artifice---it's caught by letting it speak for itself. Terrific work on this. It's a tough subject, but you delved into it and didn't come out till you got its essence. I love the shot.

Four hinges for this massive door and I like the archway that it is in!
