Description
Well, I showed you the door, so I thought you might want to see more of the Chateau de Beynac, which is one of the best preserved castles in the Dordogne...
Please zoom.

Wow!! And ll this time I thought chateaus were nice country estate homes. I did not realize they were also castles. Thanks for sharing. :)

Je me rappelle ce monstre, visité il y a plus de vingt ans, et qui domine la Dordogne. Doulce France...

I would love to explore the grounds

Any chance you can post photos from the inside? With so few windows the inside would be very interesting from an architectural point of view. Frankly, I'd like to visit this chateau. Keep up the good work! :-)

Here's a link to a photo I posted last year: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2566954&np But actually, we didn't spend very much time on the inside & I thought it was far less interesting than the outside. But I'll look through my files & see if I can find anything else worth posting.

I saw your interior photo (from the link you gave to T.Rex), and it looks as I'd think it would, with intense light pouring in, and intense shadow. The coloration of the light and its highlights on the stone is beautiful. I'm not commenting there because I have to leave soon, but it's an expressive shot. As for this facade, if there's an argument for zooming, here's another example. I'd think this a very difficult structure to capture "in its totality," because it's so angular, and because its facade says "stay out" (as structures like this were intended to say; they were fortresses). But its' very difficulty, its visual 'impossibility', comes across in your capture with a fist. It feels looming, unfriendly, dark---even though it's mostly a lighter brown-yellow hue---angular, and even mean. Those high, mostly uninterrupted walls, with all that soot and erosion, are just plain ugly, speaking of huge barriers to human life. The angle lets the light and dark show strongly. With no greenery anywhere in the shot, and just sky---which, in this case, you left with clouds and blue (which humanizes the shot)---it's a formidable "stay away" sign, the kind of place one can ogle at but think "I don't think I want to go in there". Of course, if I were there, I'd WANT to go in. But visually it says the opposite. You caught a very forbidding structure to be very forbidding. It gives one the sense that the people who lorded over this had contempt for the people outside it. Very powerful shot and postwork. A photo of a dark spirit...

OK, I immediately thought of Monty Python's "Holy Grail" and the castle where King Arthur was subjected to the vicious French taunting...I wonder if this is where they filmed it? I would have thought their budget wouldn't allow for "foreign" shooting, but I have no idea. It just looks like the same spot. Excellent shot of this very well-preserved castle!

When is a Chateau not a Chateau - when it is a huge castle! WOW! This is a Fortress!
