Description

And thanks heavens. they didn't have to fire. This is what's left of the serious stuff at Fort Columbia, Washington on the Columbia River. It was built to protect us from possible attack. Here's a bit of info about it: FORT COLUMBIA STATE PARK "Fort Columbia State Park is a 593-acre day-use historical park with 6,400 feet of freshwater shoreline on the Columbia River. The park celebrates a military site that constituted the harbor defense of the Columbia River from 1896 to 1947. The fort was fully manned and operational through three wars. The area was also home for the Chinook Indians and their famed Chief Comcomly. Fort Columbia is one of the few intact coastal defense sites in the U.S. The park provides beautiful views of the Columbia River estuary. An interpretive center, an observation station and five miles of hiking trail through mature forest are additional features of this park." History isn't my biggest interest, but it's hard not to be impressed by all this and what it means.

Its hard now to imagine the Japanese navy off the coast of Oregon but back in 1942 that was a real concern. Cool pics and a very interesting history.

Fascinating stuff; that big old gun looks quite clumsy in some odd way. Excellent shots!!!

Defences such as these served as deterrents as much as anything else. These (obviously), worked!

what a different time that was, when a cannon could protect us from attack. (Today, with all the weapons in the world, an attacker would think: "Man, you've gottttttttttt to be kidding!") A nice array of many angles, here, including some angle that looked difficult to get---you got one under the gun, from inside, and some nice side shots, plus one of the thing looking right at us. Good collage---it shows us all the views. I know, in its day, this weapon was fearsome, and we have to remember that it still IS...it just seems so small by comparison to what we're capable of now...

Coastal artillery emplacements are so fascinating! We've been to a million of them (including Fort Columbia) and just keep going back! LOL!
