Description

Bonus!!, the USS Vicksburg and TCG Goksu were supposed to leave on the high tide at 06:30 on Monday morning. For some reason they didn't and were still tied up at Liverpool when I went for a stroll in the afternoon. spare of the moment I jumped on the ' Razzle Dazzle ' ferry and went over for a closer look. Very cool shot, Neil. I just noticed it is flying the British flag as well as the "stars and stripes" (on the stern.) Do you know if this is required by foreign ships docking in British seaports? Just a thought. :-)

Generally a courtesy ensign is flown from a ship's mast. When the ship is entering or leaving port and flying its own ensign at the mast, the courtesy ensign is flown at a slightly lower level. (For ships with two or more masts, I believe, the courtesy ensign is flown from the foremast and the ship's own ensign is flown from the mainmast.) When the ship is moored or anchored, the courtesy ensign remains at the mast while the ship's own ensign and jack are flown from their staffs at bow and stern. If the host nation has a distinctive merchant ensign, this is what is used as the courtesy ensign.

You lucky bloke, Neil! Got the opportunity to cross the river and get this (and I'm sure several more) photo of the Vicksburg. Thanks for the update to Rob about the courtesy flagging - I had completely forgotten the rules about that! May we see more of these ships? Thanks for the post! Keep up the good work! :-)

There was a time when an American Naval Vessel visiting a foreign port would be a proud sight! Unfortunately now we apparently can't even afford grey paint. A great capture Neil, I'm just sorry that the US Navy looks tired and unkempt visiting an ally's port...

Yes Greywolf, normally when in a foreign post (no waters) you fly the home Countries flag as a matter of courtesy.. Though it would be the Union Jack not the Naval Ensign in this case.. Great shot Neil mate! Looks like its been at sea quite a while, some rust showing there.. I gather it has just attended the biggest Military exercise in some time in North Sea.. So, rust to be expected out there, trust me! I'll head to Shutterfly today and I will be posting some more very soon, maybe today. Rob
