Description

Captured back on an overcast 5/29/09, during my first visit to the beautiful Huntington Botanical Center and Conservatory in beautiful San Marino, California. Hope I didn't make a mess of these with my postwork. The fountains and sculpture at the Huntington, all ancient in origin, was imported from overseas, most likely Europe. Totziens.

What a gorgeous fountain that is! I wonder if they'll keep it flowing with the water shortage? It would be sad to see it dry. Lovely shots, Harry!

As an aside, Denise ponders if they keep the water going during California's enormously long water shortage---I never studied fountains, and I wonder if it's the same water going back and forth: If that were the case, then there'd be no over-use of water. But, in any case, you have 3 very different treatments here, and the montage is almost graphic, with such fascinating detail and texture. The first has an almost dreamy quality, and it starts a sequence from larger to closer to closest. Yes, this looks quite old, it's at least Renaissance if not older. (I used to know all these visual motifs---scallop-shell, the upside down fish, the fish-scales or inverse tear drops ((so common in Victorian house sidings)), but I've long forgotten them...) Your second shot is very intense, and very green, and it has the feel of a graphics presentation---I love how you intensified everything here. The yellows are heavy highlights in a very green world; and the animal head is an amazing contrast to the water, lily pads and grass. I love the composition, with the head on the right and the water opening up to our left. Worthy of an upload by itself. And finally, the last one's a closeup. You have a much whiter tone, a high key tone, and the piece is partially dissolved in light. The pads almost seem covered in snow, or fluff. A very strong contrast from the 2d image. You did a very graphic, intense job with these, where the second and third approach abstraction---esp the 3d. Your going back into your archives has pulled out all your abilities as a postworker/graphic artist, and you've breathed new life into these pictures in ways one might never have predicted. A fine treatment of this imposing old fountain, Harry---fine job. (And I wonder, how in the world do they transport these overseas? I assume in pieces. It has to be a well reinforced plane to carry a load of these stones...)
