Carol, I've owed you some comments for a few weeks now, esp after your wonderful comments in my gallery in the recent past (I loved them all, incl the most recent one, which was wonderful). I'll do a couple this evening, and then do some more during the week...This piece Is a big pulsing oil-painterly piece, with rushing strokes and striking contrasts between light and dark, single hues and mixes of hues, whites and darker hues, saturated and less saturated, and a striking mix of complementary colors (greens with reds and pink-reds)...This is one of your images where you take the viewer right into the center ("in medias res") with the flower bursting out at us and right out of the frame. This flower (or flowers) will not be contained...it sat for you, and jumped out of its seat and shouted, "I gotta be FREE!!!!" I love how you cropped it---so to speak (I know it's not a photo)---so that we caught the lily as it bursts right out of the garden...a kind of "action shot" painting. Often, you have a central flower or flowers surrounded by lots of nature...but here, the central flower/flowers bursts right out of the painting, so it's throwing its arms right at us, in a big shouting embrace. And the surrounding green is like flame (I can't help but think of Van Gogh, with your strokes and your mix of colors). And of course the contrast of greens with all those reds and pinks is striking. But the stroke language---filled with throbs and pulses and vectors of energy---makes the flower and leaves feel like they're on fire inside. The contours are clear, but they're swept-through by these big bursting energies. I mean, flowers, for all their clarity, can be so many shapes and energies all at once---they seem to be changing form as we look at them, and that's what's happening here. And you have what I assume are some stamens---those yellowish buds on the right side---peeking through, where you allow shadow to deepen the yellows into almost greens. In fact your shadows here are very rich everywhere, deepening your hues (ie, not just coloring them "gray"). For an image that takes up maybe the size of a small hardcover book on my screen, it's exploding and huge in feel...And I love how much dark hue you allow, which makes the bright hues powerful but not dominating. It's got the whole spectrum of expression in it. I don't know, the lilies I've seen were beautiful, but with a painting like this, I've been missing a ton---this sure does communicate the energy of passion and love...and I can tell you that if this is a "mood" (your word), I'm not sure I'd wanna sit down and say, "so how's it hangin', Lil???"---this lily could knock me over in one fell swoop and shout "THAT'S how it's hangin..." Quite a mood...Brilliant, Carol. A blast of power and beauty. (Do you have this in your garden? Or home? You might wanna talk to it to be sure it doesn't take out half your ground floor...) Whoosh!
