Description

Kato and Kenia Sleep peacefully My precious ones And dream of Your glory days Of growing together In the summer sun So young and free Like wild flowers Beneath the acacia tree. Your spirit so grand Fills the clouds and sky You will always be A part of the river And the land. Growing together So young and free Like wild flowers Beneath the acacia tree Beneath The Acacia Tree prose by Carol Cavalaris © This is a tribute to two precious white lions, Kato and Kenia, who passed away a few weeks ago. A disease took them, and Kato went first, and his sister, Kenia, followed him a week later. They were only six years old, too young to go. My friend, Ilona Krijgsman, has been sending me photos of them as they grew, and their beauty and innocence inspired me. I really loved those two lions, and felt a special connection with them. As soon as I saw them I knew the white lion was my spirit animal. Kato had the profile and spirit of a wise old soul, and Kenia had such a tender and loving smile. They were so happy together it made me happy. I'm very grateful I got the chance to honor them with my art. I like to imagine them together, having sweet dreams beneath an acacia tree. They will live forever in my heart, and memory. Special thanks to Ilona for sharing her beautiful photos with me. When I saw your ebot I thought this must be the tribute for kato and kenia, O Carol this is so emotional, all poses I saw in real because I took the pictures. I miss both of them so badly, I had a special connection with them as well. So sad that they got that bad cat aids, never thought that they would die so young. You made a wonderful art from those 2 beauties, so peacefull, so gentle, I really hope they found each other again in spirit life....thanks you very much for this, I bet the owners of Mondo Verde will be very happy with this

As a remembrance and celebration of these two young cats, this is a beautiful image of transcendence and a special light. The light is doused in a white pale-gold, a gold without the shimmer but with gentleness; and doused in white to make it peaceful and soothing. (Gold, for all its glory, can be much less than soothing...it's too stimulating to 'soothe'. But this pale gold 'soothes'.) I suppose gold is a strong term here, but I'm trying to say that it's more than just 'beige': Your off white and gentle yellow is very rich, and transcendent. It feels like gold soaked of its more brilliant elements, leaving a peaceful embracing light in its wake. And the way the two lions walk together and rest together, along with their almost heads growing out of the tree, make this a beautiful remembrance of their lives and radiance. As an image, by itself, it's a portrait of feline intimacy and embrace, and the protective presence of a great tree. It's splendid art. The tree's leaves have a fine lace quality: You've created an almost 3 dimensional feeling, as if that were actual lace up there. Beautiful articulation, almost etched or incised. The trunk (and visible branches) feel like swirling wood or swirling energies...there's a non-corporeal feeling to that trunk, it moves upwards like it's made of waves. It's very strong yet fragile at the same time. And you have light rays beaming down from the tree, giving the tree a protective role over the cats (who are asleep under its eaves---which would make protection perfect. Vulnerable in sleep, the tree protects them from any harm). The rays have that same white essence, tinged with some of your yellows and slightly greened yellows (that pale white-gold I mentioned above---it's not easy to get good terms for colors, sometimes)...rays made tangible. And you have grasses and leaves in front of the sleeping pair, which seem very brittle and delicate and yet strong. I love the pale blues here. In fact, you have many pale hues here---and, ok, "pale" is too weak a word, it doesn't say what I want to say: Unsaturated is better, but it's still too negative ("un"). These are 'delicate' hues, with delicate intensities, where just a small amount of hue is needed to communicate their power. Such small amounts of hue suggest that this scene is made of spirit as much as physical colors. That's what I'm trying to say by "pale". In the world of your image, a little hue is enough to light the whole universe, because it's lit, first and foremost, from within. The sleeping cats are beautifully done. You have the expression of sleeping cats---the female, with head raised, shows the total calm of cats who can, after all, sleep while keeping their heads up (and ears slightly erect), ie, slightly aware of the outer world...while the male rests totally on her back. (Nice to see that too, a vulnerable male...I think I said that in a letter, but it bears repeating here.) And the couple on the left---I assume the same two, Kenia and Kato---walk in tandem, though maybe they're seated, I can't tell...but they both crane gently to their left, as if looking at themselves sleeping. I'm saying this assuming that they're the same cats throughout the image: It feels very much your way, to show them several times in the same image, when you're celebrating their lives and mourning their passing. In this "other side" realm, creatures can see themselves, and look on in love and peace. The two heads under the tree feel like the 'memorial' portion of your image, memorializing them side by side, as they look gently into the distance. And your background is very primal, with clouds forming a primal storm, and also what appears to be a mane running through the middle ground, as if the sky were imitating the lions. (It's on the left side...) And water that flows in waves of light. All of this takes place on a shore, as if we're seeing them in their place on "the other side". (through the membrane of life and death.) I'd like to think that, when animals pass, this is where they go. They're on the edge of that land, maybe for us, maybe just to make a link with us. And that tree is a big silken-lace set of eaves for the lions... Beautifully done, gentle, peaceful, and with the sense that two animals will be companions for the rest of eternity in this place. With some stormy hues in the background, yes (they have a biblical feel to me, somehow---also primal); but mostly with hues which suggest that, on the 'other side', one need only speckle the universe with a few dabs of a hue, and it's enough to give light to all of creation. A beautiful memorial, and one of your gentlest most peaceful works of all that I've seen...
