Description
Captured back on 2/17/12, early morn, in front of what I believe was an senior citizen apartment complex.
I have a ton of pics taken over the years of this particular sort of brute, many of them either flaking paint away, or coated with hard water minerals from leakage, with the rest in virtual pristine condition. I've been reticent to post their photos because I don't know their actual name or true purpose, possibly a pair of giant water valves. Shades of the huge ships at sea. Denise would know what they are. There are many of these big guys in the city situated in front of various business and residential structures which must use a lot of water.
Have a nice day.

These certainly do look to be capable of a rather large supply of water. Very interesting combination of what look to be valves here too. Would be interesting to see those other photos of these too. Great photo concept!

Well, I don't know what they're called either, Harry; I have a feeling that you're probably correct in your assessment of valves, with manual and electronic controls. Seems odd to have them out in public like that, wouldn't they be better housed in some kind of secure area? At least I would think so. Shame they let them get so distressed, if they're going to be public then they need to be well-tended! Great shot, Harry!

You say you were reticent to post shots of these beasts because you weren't sure what they were, or what their purpose was. I know what they are: Giant pipe monsters, burrowing for minerals, sniffing out the ground for small mice. (Don't quote me on that.) This is a great Harry shot. I mean it's arch stuff: A big sprawling beast which looks like it's burrowing into the soil, with so many "parts" (its torso appears to have two big sections---abdomens maybe) with legs and a head and a very high hairdo (the valve chamber), and a lonnnnnnng tail that swings around to the front of the shot, etc. I love your angles, letting us see its sprawl, and how it has its own little "spot" etched out in between plants and fence. And you caught all the hues---pinks, oranges, some blues, bright whites, and---on the "tail" that swings to the front---heavy reds. Real clarity and boldness. The lower shot lets us see the structure much more closely, and it's grand. Esp with that wire connecting the two valve holders. Glorious shot, great find, and it has your initials---well, first and last (I don't know your middle initial)---like it was made for you, or belongs to you. How often does one find that on city pipes! (Even if "HLC" stands for something very common in LA, I don't know.) Terrific shot and find, and I love it! (And it deserves a lot more than 3 comments! It should go under "Beasts from Other Planets"...)
