Description

Taken at Wildlife Images, a rehabilitation & education center for animals in southern Oregon. I'm not quite sure how these African Sacred Ibis ended up in Oregon, though according to Wikipedia, they have been introduced into the U.S. in south Florida... Please zoom.

... strange looking beasts, they are. I have some recollection of the sacred Ibis being one of the key symbols in hieroglyphics, http://www.reshafim.org.il/ad/egypt/bestiary/ibis.htm * great image...

OMG, I'd thought I had seen virtually every kind of weird fauna, but this really takes the cake. Utterly bizarre creatures, especially with those long black snouts. Something one would expect from Australia. Fantastic clarity, composition, textures, and lighting effects in this incredible image.

Wiki is correct - strange looking birds were imported to 'play' in the fountains as the rich and famous partied at the mansions in the Palm Beach Florida area. But birds will be birds and once the clipped wing feathers grew back - they flew away and multiplied.

What wondrous and beautiful creatures these are! They look to be larger than the ibis I saw in S. Tx at a wildlife refuge? Very fancy and beautiful plumage they have. Great shot!

wow, fascinating comments. I'd have thought the birds were crated and flown to this location, but apparently they could've flown to Oregon after being imported to Fla. Anyway, the clarity and contrast in the ibises are so sharp and visually powerful, they really do take over the shot. And you caught them with the shrubby growths behind them, as if they posed in front of them for you. It's really well composed, Claude, with the water (or rocky soil that looks like water) on our right, and the rocks on the left. And the deep background on top, the big stones on bottom. They just dominate the center and draw us to it. Terrific bird shots. And I had no idea they were sacred to Ancient Egypt.
