Description

Tufas form under water. That means every bit of surrealistic limestone at Mono Lake was once covered in water. The level of the lake dropped 45 feet between 1941 and 1982. That's not 45 feet from the old shore to the new shore ... that's 45 feet in height. They measure the level of the lake in feet above sea level.

And it still hasn't regained its 1963 level. We really do tend to ruin everything we touch.

Most surprising information and the rock formations are fascinating, seeing them 'above ground'.

Fantastic, but I have learned, that the lands are waving up and down over many years. Once the place where I am sitting now, was under water and many years before that, it was almost like it is now. Beautiful shots, Tara :-)

It's amazing to consider that volume of water drop. Sad how we ruin the earth...

Really great photos despite the sad record of decreasing water levels, Tara. This really looks like a fascinating place.
