Description

First of all, my apologies to the Canadians out there for not having a shot of the Avro Arrow, more about that soon.. This is the Cosford based TSR2.. A masterpiece of design and a perfect example of Politicians going where they shouldn't.. This is a small example of what the 'in service' aircraft could have been capable of.. During one flight the aircraft achieved Mach 1 on dry power only.. With a faulty reheat fuel pump on one engine (i.e. only one engine had re heat), 'Bee' Beamont, the test pilot used the single remaining re heat unit and accelerated away from the chase plane, an in in service Lightning.. (Yes, the fabled Lightning!)..It then had to use both engines on re heat to catch up.. And then our Government cancelled it! The Avro Arrow, without doubt the best aircraft ever designed in Canada, maybe in North America.. While still in development, it was already doing 1,000mph at 50,000 feet while climbing.. And then the Government cancelled it.. Now the unpleasant bit.. Sadly, both cases have connections to money and American companies and broken promises.. The Canadian ended up with Hornets.. We were going to have F-111's which were not sold to us as just like now, they weren't ready.. The TSR2 would have been.. I have read much about cancelled projects here and deals broken.. Protests etc.. (Concorde).... When everybody cancelled orders, protests stopped.. Odd that.. Anyway point is a massively masted example of hardware, so good, so sad.. Both of them.. Rob (Rant over!)

T.S.R. 2 was an impressive aircraft and one of my favorite aircrafts. From this perspective it looks awesome. AFAIK it's the only one surviving.

Money talks all else walks... I firmly believe that all political positions should be term limited, also any illegal irregularities should be a MANDITORY persecution to the fullest extent of the law. " Sell your vote, spend your dough at the prison commissary " this rant continues off line, seemingly endlessly

MAN! Looks like a giant injection needle from this vantage point. Something to inject politicos in the butt with? Preferred concoction: KCN (pot-ASS-ium cyanide). So many good aircraft, etc., scrapped. Why? All the work and costs in research and development to waste. Wrecking the defense industry. And if suddenly needed (God forbid!), one doesn't have it. Putin knows, and is re-arming Russia with the most modern stuff available. And so is China. The west is falling behind. And the US and other western countries defense industries and military are leaking like sieves to Russia and China. They get the benefits of our R&D, we get the bad results of politico idiocy when our developments get used against us. Now, where to find a Tornado by Airfix.... Keep up the good work, and the rants and raves. It may have a positive effect! :-)

As you know mate Government and broken promises are the same thing. It happened then and it's the same now. I think the any promises they make before an election they should be forced to keep unless there is very good reason or they should be made accountable. Cool shot though mate.

Excellent photo of a surviving TSR2. It is an aircraft I have always admired. Here in Canada, when they cancelled the Arrow, the existing aircraft were cut into pieces with blowtorches and sold for scrap! I enjoy your photos very much!

I reserve the right to rant and rave and just fly off the handle at some later date when I am more calm and capable of making an intelligent argument in line with the rest of you. This may a take a few weeks (LOL). I do like the photo and the fact that there are no PEOPLE in it!!!!!!! NIce one, Rob.

Even today the TSR2 looks like something from a sci-fi movie. And when you compare it to other British designs of the time, unusually angular! Thank heavens they didn't cut it up, at least. Bits & pieces of the Arrow still exist - the aviation museum in Ottawa has the forward section of RL-206 (the first of the Mk.2 Arrows with the Orenda Iroquois engine... it never flew) and some wing panels. A few Iroquois engines have turned up, including one at an engine test facility in the UK! Some other small bits as well. For the record, we scrapped the Arrow and instead got BOMARC missiles, then replaced those with F-101B Voodoos and F-104 Starfighters, and then replaced those with the Hornets! Now they want to replace those with the bloody F-35... and barely enough to equip 2 squadrons! And to answer the question, Politicians will finally grow a pair when it actually helps them get votes.

The only way the politicians will grow a pair is when: 1. There's a vote in it. 2. There's a buck in it Even then, there's little promise.... Aside from that, what a great shot you got of this futuristic aircraft, Rob!

You got me going on reading the wiki on the entire project. Got a kick out of this quote: Aeronautical engineer Sir Sydney Camm said of the TSR-2: "All modern aircraft have four dimensions: span, length, height and politics. TSR-2 simply got the first three right." Neat head-on photo.

The vast majority of politicans in Canada and the U.S. are lawyers - enough said.

That's a great question mate. I love the 'pigs' and the 'rhinos'. We have a 'pig' on permanent display at an airbase near here. She's a great old gal, and was farewelled with reverence when her and her friends were replaced with the Super Hornets.

Fabulous POV and ambiance in this shot of that beauty, mate. Is that a delta wing I see? Good rant on the politicos. At least we'll have the F-35 Lightning II to fill in the gaps. ;-)
