Description

On one of the cold, rainy days we had in S. Dakota, we decided to visit some indoor attractions. I couldn't help but think of Art as we toured this one. This is a working Paleontological dig site at Hot Springs, S. Dakota, close to where we stayed. The area had been purchased several years ago to be developed as a housing development. Fortunately, the owner realized the scientific and historical value of the site when a bulldozer uncovered fossilized bones in 1974 and stopped the excavation immediately. You can read more about the site HERE. Thus far, they have discovered 58 Colombian and 3 Woolly mammoths here, along with numerous other fossils. The site was once a pond formed from a spring-fed sinkhole. The edges of the pond were lined with vegetation, and were quite slippery. As the mammoths tried to reach the vegetation, the fell into the pond and were unable to escape. This photo is of one of the many skulls - with tusks still intact - discovered at the site. I'll have more photos this week. I'm a bit under the weather - seems Jo and I both have the same cold.. Bleah.. I'm also working on Page 21 of the T.N.A. story, and hope to post it soon... Thanks for dropping by, and for those of you who take the time to comment it is deeply appreciated. I've noticed comments have dropped off sharply after this latest "improvement" to the site. Hope you all have a great week!

Oh man, this sort of thing is right up my alley! Neat shot of the dig.

We spent an hour this afternoon in a gallery of petrified wood. Your mammoths may be younger..., the wood we saw underwent petrification between 9 and 20 million years ago.

Yep - the mammoths are relative 'newbies' on a historical scale.... These are around 26,000 years old. Quite a distance from 9 to 20 million!

Neat place! I'd love to take the kiddies to this place, but I don't think any of us would survive the drive. Great photo!

" I swear, it wasn't me! He was like that when I found him!" - T.Rex.

I've read about it, and now, thanks to you, I've seen a small part of it. More, please.

As for your cold, I've had it,too (the Turkish variant) from a neighbor back from vacation. Drat how these viruses spread like wild fire all over the earth! Keep up the good work! :-)

It's like a job to come to the site any more. Used to love to, but not any more. It is too slow and makes to dizzy to look at it. I am sure that is the reason for the drop in comments.

Fabulous shot of this elephant graveyard... thankfully saved from "progress". Rest well and boost your zinc.

Awesome Rod! Just viewing this is cool, but I can only imagine discovering such a site. I am happy to learn that the discovery took precedent over a development and the amount of finds there is nothing short of incredible. Also good to know it's an ongoing dig. I appreciate the nod to me and my love of all things prehistoric. Thanks for sharing this. Maybe you have some more? Get well.

And yes, comments are not as forthcoming or immediate as they used to be. I have fallen down on the job too. Getting the ebots made things more immediate and prompts action as well. I'm getting used to getting through the activity feed, but ebots would only help that even more. You get larger file sizes and have to give up something else. I guess they only half listen.
