Taken---and uploaded!---on my iPad. Not the best pic of me, but that's right after my real estate Closing (when I bought my condo). I look like I'm in worship!
One of my favorite ties. And those are the shoes I wore. Yep, I own Spectator shoes.
They were called that because, in the early 20th C, the upper-crust in Britain wanted to wear vedddy fancy shoes to "spectator" events---but they wanted to look "sporty". So they wore dress shoes---calf skin, wingtips, etc---only they made them two-tone. With the second tone lighter. Boom: A sporty dress shoe.
Well, America took these over and made them the property of gangsters and jazz musicians. (Ya didn't know I hung out with gangsters...) You still see them once in awhile today.
When I wear these on the street, people look. (I wish they looked at me me as much, but I'll take what I can get.) And lemme tell ya: Caring for ivory-colored calf skin is not fun: It soils very easily. BUT!
I wore these to my Closing, with 3 heavy lawyers in a small room, an assistant who shouted "NAME!" "AGE!" "DATE OF BIRTH" at me like I were in the army. And with a pile of contracts dense enough to start my own Country. I'll tell you about that another time. To liven things up, I brought in the June Taylor dancers.
Oh---and that umbrella handle, in the last shot? That's a hand-made umbrella. It's from one of maybe 6 handmade umbrella-makers left in Europe. (3 are in Britain). It's by Francesco Maglia. I took it, as it drizzled that day. If you're interested, the shaft is a solid chunk of wood, and weighs appr 6 million pounds. (That's about 90 gazillion kilograms, give or take.)
Ok, I'm still commenting---I will get to you all!
Thanks so much for all your visits and support---it means the world to me.
Have a fine Tuesday!
Mark

You make me laugh with your narrative! I know about that Library of Alexandria-sized pile of documents, I couldn't believe one pen would last through all the signatures and initialling that had to be done when my ex and I bought our home in California. We had to schedule vacation time to take care of signing alone! Guarantees I'll never be an author agreeing to a book-signing event, that alone would cause a major disability. Well, that and the fact I could never write a book to begin with. The shots? Nice. You have a very friendly and approachable face, despite your tendency to hang out with the wrong types...and excellent taste in clothing too! Congrats on your signing, are you also signing onto a press gang to pay for your condo? You would have to if it was here, that's for sure. I read this morning that there's a penthouse condo in Seattle renting for $9,500 a MONTH. And someone will rent it, no problem. Won't be me, though! The world is going mad at an amazing pace...

Love the tie, love the shoes, love the umbrella. VERY nicely done! But what I like best is how happy you look! Whether you're happy to finally own your condo, or just happy to have that whole process over and done with, the smile is worth a million bucks. Two million. Maybe a brazillion. Something in that neighborhood. :P
Yay! I'm happy for you that you're a condo-owner! :)

Well, it's good to 'see' you, Mark! And you do look quite dapper as well as a happy camper!
If I looked that happy after a contractual signing like the one you endured, it would probably be because I'd just beaten the stuffing out of 3 heavy lawyers and a loudmouth assistant with that 6 million pound umbrella handle... :-P
I loved the photos and your fun narrative!

Nice pics of you all dressed up, Mark, looking all pleased with the dark suit and tie, plus your formal 10 Downing Street footwear. Congratulations, but all that pomp and circumstance for a condo closing? Is this for real? I never had to go this hotsie totsie route when I bought my condo, or for the two refinancings after that. This wasn't exactly like purchasing a skyscraper in the heart of downtown Chicago. And the inquisition by three lawyers acting as if you had been nominated for a seat on the Supreme Court, or for a high Government office? I knew Illinois had its idiosyncrasies, but this is bizarre and surreal. Shades of Alice in Wonderland. In any event, I bet you're glad that's over.

The great Mark Gatsby, off to do the Charleston at some sleezy dive?
What fun to read about your formal occasion! I LOVE the two tone brogues, an investment in themselves.

OMG! What can I say, that isnt already written here? The very best is your happy face, Mark. It is doing us good to see. :-) I would have loved to be a fly on the wall, when you showed up in that awesome outfit. Those shoes and umbrella and yourself. HA! I can see them stare with open mouth :) Once again a big CONGRATULATION on the condo. Hope you didnt get cramp in your hand, when signing all the papers. :D Thank you also for sharing the narrrative. The word that immediately popped into my mind was "dapper" (a word I've very rarely used in my life). To assure myself that it was indeed the right descriptor, I googled it & the result was:
"(typically of a man) neat and trim in dress, appearance, or bearing. synonyms: smart, spruce, trim, debonair, neat, well dressed, well groomed, well turned out, elegant, chic, dashing; informal: snazzy, snappy, natty, sharp, spiffy, fly "doesn't Norm look dapper in his new suit?"
Though you've only provided your top part & bottom accessories, Mark, I can imagine the whole package. I see you leaning on the umbrella & doing a little soft shoe number with the grace & ease of Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire. The three lawyers & their assistant, of course, break out into spontaneous & very enthusiastic applause...

I think, this is what they call in English: 'looking veddy dapper' (also in OZ/Australia), if we should happen to see someone dressed like this, which is most unlikely in our regional area, where I am living now - unless one attends a play in a proper theater in a big city, about Bugsy Spiegel ;)) ... and I'm glad you took the 'brollie' along, we can't have those shoes get wet now, do we ? and what about that tie ? wow, it's a reflection of your artworks, well close enough, not quite as saturated, 'nuff said ;)) - it must have been quite an ordeal - but you have giving us all a bit of a giggle, I should rather say a splendid time by reading your little missive - and it's good not to take life too seriously ... in Ozzie slang, you look 'as happy as a pig in mud' LOL - I would be too, if I am suddenly elevated to a new status - enjoy Mark and celebrate with a bottle of 'bubbly' and friends.
Cheers BB

So now you are a property owner. And now the REAL pain begins. HOA rules, regulations and fees, and property taxes. Can't forget that. I'd like to but I can't. Don't get me wrong, it still beats renting. And I love the shoes, been looking for a black and grey pair, like, forever. You do look quite dapper. Nice to see you. Neither of my two closings were formal affairs but perhaps I should have dressed up just to freak out everyone. Once I closed escrow it was assumed by everyone that I couldn't afford anything else including nice clothes. Nice set of photos. I hope you are happy in the new place.
