Description
The Cathedral of The Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception (La Catedral de la Virgen María de la Concepción Inmaculada de La Habana) is one of eleven Roman Catholic cathedrals on the island of Cuba. Located in the Plaza de la Catedral, the Havana Cathedral is found in the center of Old Havana. It serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana which covers 7,542 square kilometers of the island and 2,821,000 Catholics.
Plans were drawn for the cathedral in 1727 and it was finally completed in 1777. Legend has it that the remains of Christopher Columbus once resided within the cathedral. The remains were moved in 1898 back to Spain after the Cuban War of Independence. The cathedral is also dedicated to Saint Christopher (San Cristóbal). Because of this it is sometimes called the Cathedral of Saint Christopher.
In 1982 the cathedral was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You did so well to get the tower in! It is a most interesting style, which is solid without being overbearing, and full of great detail without being fussy. I'm enjoying this holiday!

Ditto Andrea, I love her comment, I'm enjoying this holiday of yours immensely too. When I saw your shot of the airport (signaling a Cuba series), I was really excited, as we Americans can finally go there now, and somehow it was fitting that you would be the one to bring us there. I agree with Andrea that this style---Spanish to the core---is solid without being overbearing, (European cathedrals can leave one flattened after awhile, with their massive, massive structures.) You caught an angle which allows the sun to do its magic. It's bleaching! You got terrific shadow, and fine detail on the brick and the cornices, and the roof tiles, and the crimson-brown doors, etc...a luscious sun-bleached shot. Even that lone lantern on the far right (under that fort-like bell tower)---I love its lonely existence, with a delicate shadow underneath. A really fine architectural shot, and man am I enjoying what you're sharing of this trip.

Stunning; there's something very wedding cake-like about the swirls and rosettes on the outside of this cathedral. Lovely and satisfying to the eye, a wonderful capture!

Gorgeous Mark,...I am immediately reminded of the cathedral of San Fernando located in downtown San Antonio. It too dates back to the 1700s with a whole string of updates into the 20th century. I am enjoying following you along your holiday trek in Cuba.

My goodness. What a gorgeous style! It looks as if it were carved from wood. Simple lines, even at their most complex, and so pleasing to follow. This alone makes your visit to Cuba worth the time. Beautiful architecture!
