Description
This is the answer to the "guess the bird species" in my close up of bird feathers image. It is a Greater Roadrunner, common in the southern US states. It's about the size of a slender chicken - up to 2 feet long, and is a member of the cuckoo family. They are very fast runners, and can fly briefly to jump a fence or fly into a low tree branch for short periods.
This is Rocko the Roadrunner. He suffered some kind of injury and has a decided limp, so cannot be released back into the wild. He lives in a very large glass walled and roofed enclosure filled with trees, plants and grasses at a nature center. It was fun to be able to get close enough to him to get several shots, in comparison to stealthy sneak tactics out in the country. Yes, I clipped the tip of his tail, but this shot was all sunny versus others that were part sun, part shade.
Thank you very much for your views and comments.

Meep meep! He's so handsome! Love the feather pattern and his beautiful sharp eyes! Wonderful shot even minus the tail tip!

I don't mind that you clipped his tail a bit. I'd be lucky to SEE him, let alone get a shot (unless he was behind a cow, which seems to be my specialty.) LOL! The detail in full view is impressive!

Good heavens, this was the source of your mystery feather photo? I would have never guessed it. I imagined a huge bird with that carpet of feathers. Anyway, an admirable capture of the hors d'usage roadrunner, Maria. It gave you a great profile pose, with its cool patterns. And it does remind me of a chicken.

Wonderful detail at the zoom. I know his cartoons well but have never seen one in person. Well done Maria.

such a beautiful bird and capture. when I was in Lake Havasu there was one running around where I had stopped to eat. every time I would point the camera it would run of course

yeah, I know his cartoons too, lol (ala some commenters above), and he never looked so good. Your detail is beautiful, and the sweep, with the tail sweeping past the rocks he's standing on, gives music to the whole right side of the photo. As do those two shadows behind the tail...A wonderful solo-bird shot; and I can see where that closeup shot came from. What a varied set of feathers! They move in rivers and valleys. Beautiful work, as always, Maria. And I will do a longer session here before the month ends...

One of the better roadrunner shots I've seen! The ones I've seen are usually showing their tail feathers. Nice catch!
