Description

The gas company continue the mammoth task of renewing our century old gas main. They are very skilled men who work in all weathers, but they do have some cool kit. I really fancy a go with this. A look at the business end Here

the flickr version has real grit and presence, the inner workings of these beast-machines. This one has more 'poetry' (if you'll allow the word), it has more grace, even though it's a big chunk of forged metal...there's something graceful about the connection of parts, and in your treatment of them...This is actually beautiful in your hands. The green against the orange-red, against the stark whites, against that molded green fence...Mark/wysiwig just posted a stunning shot of workers on a similar project (though in much greater heat), this seems to be a theme this morning. And even though there are no people in this shot, we feel their presence through the machines they work with. I did street repair for about 3 month, years back, and while it wasn't long, I can tell you that no matter how exhausted you get, you get an awe at the machines---they become 'dear' to you, and you protect them like they were your own. I'll bet that the workers here are feeling some pride at this machine, no matter how tired they are...A real eye-popper, Andrea: We should call this day a day of remembering laborers, a subject everyone should pay attention to, because without these people, our life as we know it would grind to a total halt.

That's a big shovel, it fits into a lot of earth. Superb shot. It's the same here, many water pipes and gas pipes are rotten, everywhere are large construction sites.

I am banned from using one of these as the last time I did It put me in hospital , I had been digging a trench for a rainwater pipe I was fine till I got off It then my leg buckled and the pain hit me I stood it till midnight then had to be taken to hospital , It took two months for the pain to go. Lots of digger drivers suffer with bad backs to do with all the jerking the machines do.

Playing in the dirt with shovels. We never really grow up. We simply grow taller. Terrific close up showing that even the most mundane objects have a beauty and intricacy all their own.
