Description
This young man is Miroslav, who gave us a short guided tour of Bratislava. All of the native guides that were hired by our cruise line were very good - they were knowledgeable, generally entertaining, & spoke English well. Miroslav was my favorite among them because of his very funny self-deprecating sense of humor & an accent that reminded me of the Ukranian comedian Yakov Smirnoff. I told him that he could easily be a professional comedian if he wanted to be. I wish I could remember some of his funny comments, but my memory being what it is, I don't.
I really didn't know anything about Slovakia before this trip. Miroslav seemed proud of the fact that his country had a booming automobile manufacturing industry. Volkswagen, Peugot/Citroen & Kia all have manufacturing plants there & Jaguar has one planned. They manufacture more cars per capita than any other country in the world, with about 1 million cars & a population of about 5 million...

I didn't even know it was a country until I looked it up, as a result of your photos. Nor did I know they made so many autos. Miroslav is on the right, and he draws the whole shot to him. I really like him with that flag or banner; and you got him doing what he does (rather than smiling at you), so we're 'in the scene'. Lots of light on top, more shadow below---a powerful contrast playing out behind him. A fine shot of a person doing what they do, and he looks kind too. I remember Smirnoff's broad engaging accent (and humor) (didn't he say, "whaaaat a great cuuuuuntry!!!"), and it's great to have a guide who has a genuine sense of humor: You get a free standup show while learning about they city...A warm and fine capture, and a fine street shot too.

He looks like he was fun, an engaging personality is a real bonus in that job. Wonderful portrait!
