Description
Do you see him?
This has been a week of hurt and anger. As of 6 days ago, there were no eggs visible in the nest. I do not remember when I have been more offended , hurt and angry at the absolute "Don't give a damn" attitude of people. The cutting at the nest site traumatized this pair of eagles. They became very uneasy and vocal. I have never seen this behavior from them prior to this. I went to the nest 6 days ago to find it empty. I do not cry much these days, but I sat on that bluff and cried. I was sure all was lost for this year.
Yesterday, I called my friend to see if he had been continuing to watch the nest. He does this from across the river with his telescope. He said that the female had been at the nest all day. We were so hoping that they would lay a second clutch of eggs this year. I told him that I would go up on my way home from work, but that she would not leave the nest at my last two visits. Long ago she stopped reacting to my appearing at the nest. I asked him to go up with me so that I could see if there were eggs as I knew she would fly if someone else came. And so she did. Within 5 seconds or so, I could not believe what I was seeing. There is a so very beautiful chick!! This wise and wonderful mother had covered this egg so that it would be protected. He seems to be very healthy and expressed this very loudly. Mother stayed in a tree some distance away. Tony and I just stood there in awe. You have no idea of the joy this little fuzzball brought me. I almost forgot to get the pictures. After a few minutes, i told Tony that we needed to leave as I did not want the chick to get cold. He turned and went about 20 feet up the hill. The mother then did what she has done almost every time I have been up this year. She flew over my head, no more than 15 feet above me, turned and glides to the nest. I am used to this wonderful eagle accepting me, but this was special. She was telling me it is Ok for me to see her baby. She does not fear me. This is what my mother always taught me. We need to respect and care for animals. Now it seems that I have the respect of one of the most magestic animals in the world. This, of course, put me in tears again. As i said goodby and walked up the hill, I saw Tony just standing there shaking his head with tears in his eyes. He told me that he believed me when I would say she knew me, but he did not understand just how much she trusted me. And how she was able to show that by her actions.

not enough stars on this site to express what I see. I am so happy that there is a nestling there. I just hope that the inconsiderate bastard stays away from the nest.

I see the top of a piece of white fluff! Oh joy! But, who was cutting near the nest? Wood? Why? You should have a sign "Trespassers Risk Being Shot On Sight!" That ought to scare off most intruders. However, I think you seeing their display of anger and frustration has taught you a bit about their behavior. Something to avoid. Or risk having a surprise aerial attack, which can be a very nasty experience. Something stupidly optimistic fools subject themselves to. I wonder what the chick sounds like? Do you have a small tape recorder? I love to hear about the mother's salute to you, flying low over you. Kind of like saying good bye for this time. Reading this put tears in my eyes, too. It's awe inspiring. I'm looking forward to more photos. Keep up the good work! :-)
