Description

In my previous post of the Roman Stone Quarry if you look in the top left side of the photo you will see a roof of a building. That is the roof of the entrance building and gift shop. This view is from the patio of that building. Below you can see a wall which is the wall to protect the Roman Quarry area. In the distance you can see picnic tables and olive trees. About a kilometer through more olive treesto the right-hand side is the Monestary at Saint Remy de Provence. I will post more about that later, but for the Van Gogh fans, yes, this is the place where he lived and underwent treatment for about a year. The trees to the left of this shot block the view of the Arch of Triumph and the mausoleum I posted. Those two large more complete structures and the Roman quarry can all be seen free of charge if you arrive to the parking area before it opens. We fully expected to pay for parking, but there was no one there when we arrived about 15 minutes before opening time. We walked over and viewed the Arch and mausoleum and then saw the booth was manned as we were heading over to the Glanum entrance. So we asked about paying, but the nice lady said if were were already parked there was no charge. So being early birds saved us a few euros. I say this for those of you who travel on a tight budget. In truth the entrance fee was no high. Here is the info from the site: Glanum Ruins The site sits in a narrow valley sloping up from the north to the higher southern end. A quarry is located before the entrance. Inside, the site includes a Residential Area and a Monument Area, and at the back (south) a Sanctuary area was well-protected by a defensive wall stretching between two steep rocky hills. The entrance building has two excellent models of the site, one showing the buildings of the 150-50 BC era and the other showing the "modern" Roman buildings from 50 BC. Excellent detailed information is included in the book The Roman Remains of Southern France, by James Bromwich; Routledge; ISBN 0-415-143586. Open: 9h00-19h00 Entry: 6.50 euros Personally I think the entrance fee was well worh it. It was a fascinating place. Thank you for all the kind comments on previous posts

Please excuse my typos above....It was supposed to say the entrance fee is "not" high and I missed a space in there as well.

Although fees help to maintain and preserve these historic relics, it's money well spent to see where such splendid history happened. Thanks for sharing your experience :)
