Many modern people think of the ancients as stupid and backward. Ruins such as these remind us that sometimes they were smarter and more innovative than we are. Excellent POV.

wonderful image of these enormous blocks, which were brought in and hand set... quite a feat without machinery.

Wonderful POV and depth in what could easily pass for an earthquake fault. Be wary where you trod.

When we studied Ancient Rome, I was washed over with how brutal and devouring the Romans were with other lands. But within their own society, they sure knew a lot about cities and the mechanics of making them work. We can see those mechanics here, even through centuries of decay. (The plaque and drawing helps piece it all together for us.) But above all, I love this photo! In full zoom (2 clicks), your perspective comes alive and it's really dramatic. The detail of the foreground, and how it tapers into the town back there, makes a wonderful journey. And the play of shadow against these sun baked stones is wonderful. As are the "cushioning" of the hills (right side) and the facades (left side). A wonderful capture of a decayed city/town, and it's mechanics beautifully exposed. You have a natural feel for light and shadow, and the forms it creates across everything it touches. Beautiful piece, Katherine.
