Description
The skeleton king was true to his word, he sent his escorts. Three skeletons now brown with age appear within minutes, this tells me that their masters chamber can't be far. Every part of me wants to cut them down where they stand, but I can't...I need to see this through, I need to meet this skeleton king.
I try to keep as much distance between them and myself as I can which proves to be easy since they stop at every corner and gesture me to continue following. Watching them is creepy, the way the move is unnatural. I test them by stopping completely, I want to see what they will do. When they realize I'm not following they hiss with anger and dissatisfaction, that more than anything seems wrong. They appear to be human skeletons, yet humans are incapable of hissing in such a manner. The sound is more of what I would expect to hear from a demon.
"I'm coming, I'm coming." I tell them.
This seems to appease them and they disappear around the corner. They are out of sight now, if ever there was going to be a moment to turn and flee it would be now. I can easily outrun them, but I have no idea where I'm going and could easily end up hitting a dead end. For all I know they would find me and overwhelm me with sheer numbers and I would be trapped with my back against a wall. Then again there is a chance I could find a way out, find Hayden. But my instincts are telling me to face this skeleton king, that my way out is through him.
I move towards the corner trailing the skeletons once again, however this time as I turn the corner I see a huge double door at the end of the hall and I know I have reached the chamber. There are even more skeletons here, but they begin lining up shoulder to shoulder with their backs to the wall on both sides of the hall. They all take up the exact same position, I mean exact! It's disturbing. To reach the double door I know have to walk down the hall between them, there must be ten on each side. If they strike at me here I wouldn't stand a chance, the hall isn't wide enough for my fighting style to be effective. Their master said he wanted to meet me though so I can only assume they will let me pass in peace, if they kill me now he will be deprived of that opportunity.
I hesitantly and cautiously begin moving down the hall watching the skeletons closely. They don't move, not one of them so much as even looks at me. Reaching the door I see that it's even larger than I realized, it looks like a troll could pass through it without having to hunch over. As I place my hand on the doors handle I'm suddenly rocked with pain. I assume I'm being attacked, but quickly realize that's not the case. The pain is radiating from my left shoulder, from the demon mark.
I hesitate from pushing the door open, is the demon mark trying to tell me something or is the pain simply a side effect of the mark itself? I have no way of knowing for sure, but having hesitated I do now notice the power emanating on the other side, beyond this door is evil.
The pain in my shoulder subsides so there is no sense in delaying the inevitable. I take a deep breath and push both doors open, I can immediately feel that this room is enormous. As I cross the threshold the doors slam close behind me. "SLAM!" I wasn't ready for that and it startles me causing me to jump. Instinctively I turn and try opening the doors again, but they are sealed tight, I'm guessing magically.
Then from the darkness behind me comes a deep ominous voice.
"Welcome mortal, we have been expecting you."
