Description
Hi,
Taken at Navy Day, Shuttleworth 5th June 2016, when this was completed I saw it and thought, is this the best photo I've taken?
This is the Fighter Collection, Duxford based, 1932 Hawker Nimrod Mk I.. It is the only airworthy example (there is a Mk II airworthy as well).
It was found, in a bit of a mess, in the early 1970's in a London scrap yard and took till 1999 to get it just sitting on the under carriage! She flew in 2000 and is painted in the correct colours she actually wore, 802 NAS (Navel Air Squadron) during the 1930's..
Nimrods never fired their guns in anger but were used up until January 1942 under taking weather checks.. This is the third production aircraft.. She served on HMS Glorious..
She has to started by Hucks Starter!

MY! This is a beautiful photo of a beautiful plane! Lots of details. The ribs and frames are clearly visible, accentuated by the light and shadow. And it needs a starter motor to get the engine running. Very lucky it was found in time so it wasn't broken up and scrapped. Is this the only one left? Keep up the good work! :-)

Gorgeous!
Hawker had a series of designs in the 30's that, to me at least, are probably the most beautiful biplanes ever. And the Nimrod is one of that series! (Hart, Hind & Fury being the others). And you can see the ancestry of the Hurricane, perhaps Sydney Camm's most important design in them.

Makes me almost release my death grip on praise only for those actually involved in combat. Something I need not to be a bore and phoney! It is a wonderful shot as the colors and shadows play. (skulking to hide from my critics) I truly do like it for it's own presentation of military discipline.

Tamarrion is right about the Hawker aircraft of the 30s. Pure elegance of design is seen in another one of your calendar shots!

Rob, this is a fabulous capture. Perfect. Must look if I have a Nimrod on my hard disk...
