Description

Hi, Fly Navy Day at Shuttleworth and, right in front of me sat the Swordfish... Barely an arm length away.. Well seemed it lol So, after some cranking and two changes of personnel she bust into life, grass flying everywhere and hats going walkabout.. (I was ready for this having removed mine lol) Ohhh! The smell of Avgas in the afternoon.. Wonderful... This is 'City of Liverpool' a 'Blackfish' built by Blackburn, actually a Fairy Swordfish Mk II built in 1943 she served on MAC ship Rapana in the Atlantic with the largest ever Fleet Air Squadron 836, 'L' Flight. It should be noted film buffs, she also flew in 'Sink the Bismark'.. This was her first show after a lay off.. Swordfish are WAY bigger than you think! Rob

Fantastic photo from a cool and bit unusual angle. I can just about hear the engine roar and smell the exhaust fumes! As for size, length - they HAVE to be, or they wouldn't be able to carry a fat, heavy torpedo! She was in "Sink The Bismarck"? The old black/white 1950s version? Oh, my, I'll have to go back to see that again! Keep up the good work! :-)

You lucky guy. I'd have given an Amercan sawbuck to smell that exhaust and take in the history.

Not so great for the lungs (or ears!), but wonderful for the imagination!

You're not kidding about the size of those planes. They are huge!

Not some stubby Grumman with tiny empennage. This is high aspect ratio a Jenny could love.
