I wonder if reducing the intensity of the background might enhance our experience of the lichen. Just a thought.

That would definitely be another valid way to go. I tend to favor vivid colors, but I can appreciate the value of restraint & subtlety. Unfortunately, a lot of the tonal subtleties of original photos are lost when converting to JPG, even at the highest quality settings...
