Description

I stopped about 50 m after I took off from the house and took this picture. The time was 17:14. It was OK going through Oberammergau and the one mile to Ettal, but then the road descended for several miles with lots of curves. At the top of the hill I tapped the brakes and the rear end of the car felt squirrelly. So I crept down the hill at about 20 mph or less, with one car behind me going the same speed. My main concern was that when attempting to turn and follow the curves while lightly applying the brakes, instead of turning, the car would slide straight and possibly go over the edge. After several anxious miles I hit the main road to Garmisch turned and headed toward the Autobahn. Well, the Autobahn had not been cleared, the snow wasn't that deep but there were no tracks to follow, My main concern was getting off the paved part of the highway. The good thing was that there was no traffic to speak of. A couple of cars followed me and after about 20 miles or so toward Munich the conditions improved. I made it through Munich following my trusted 6-year old Garmin and finally saw the gas station at the airport. After filling up, because if the tank is less than full there goes another hefty charge I took the car to the garage and turned it in. It took me three times around the airport to find the right garage, because all the signs were partially covered by snow and half of the information was not legible. Anyway, I made it . This picture was taken on 4 January 2017, Sig...

Glad you made it, Sig. I'll bet many of us have been in similar situations were it's tough to see and skidding is a major worry. The pic describes it all! (And 20 MPH on the autobahn! Who woulda thunk it?)

Glad you made it. I agree that 20 mph on the Autobahn is a bit strange but seeing this picture, why not
