Description
Well...
Every year or two, I repost these old pencil drawings to commemorate my entry into the art world. I'd drawn before, but mainly technical stuff: These were my entry into me loving drawing. So they're special to me.
I chose brushes because they were the 'raw materials' of the artist (in the 1980s).
The top is the original of my avatar. Some of you saw photostats of this---but this is the original, which I just found! ("Photostats" were high-level copies before electricity and running water. It came in a little after the Civil War, when I was still a child.) Colored pencils.
The second is my second brush drawing---same materials. Lots of rubbing in these.
The last is my avatar. It's the first drawing, sized down and matted on Japanese paper. (I sold it. Also a photostat...)
I post these to celebrate 9 years---this spring---since I entered RR. And to wish you wonderful people a blessed holiday and spring, and give you huge thanks for everything you've given me, and everything you've given, period. For all the craziness life can throw at us, it's a privilege to be an artist: We're a brother-and-sisterhood, and nothing can take that away, not the worst life has to offer. I'll be back soon to comment...but I wish you all love and inspiration and a terrific spring season; and as a teacher once said, "always keep your wings open---never stop flying for a moment"...
Inspiration to all!
Mark

Very cool to see them again, Mark. They are beautifuly designed and artistic it showcases your talents my friend. Love all of them so I can't pic a fav on the three. If forced at gun point, I would say do I feel lucky today? Thanks for sharing.

The subtle shading on these never fails to please me. I love your brushes. But seriously ... you SOLD your avatar? Your AVATAR? Isn't that sort of like selling your soul, or your child, or something? Well, I suppose at the time you didn't know it was going to be the visual representation of you as an artist. I hope whoever bought it appreciates what they have! anahata.c's original avatar. Holy moly!

These are lovely! I like how the softness of the bristles comes across in the drawing. Fabulous job!

These three pieces are truly wonderful and in the time I've gotten to know you and your sense of humor and acute observations, I see all three as very befitting of you. Congratulations on 9 years here.

Wow, Mark! I haven't been here for months and I sneak back tonight and here's your 9th year celebratory post. Love your familiar brushes...the detail, the softness, the shading and the loving care I know you've lavished on these drawings. Even see what appears to be Chinese characters on the side of one of 'em. Of course, I most appreciate all the art I've learned from watching your gallery, as well as reading and rereading your professional, in-depth comments on the work of others (as well as mine) since my arrival in August 2008. Hey, that's almost nine years for me too. Doesn't time fly!

Mark, I always enjoy viewing these wonderful brushes you created, and it's a great way to commemorate your artist adventures, before and after Rendo. It's been 14 years on Rendo for me now, and I'm so grateful for all the wonderful friendships I've found here. Wishing you a bountiful and beautiful Spring.

What a wonderful phrase your teacher told you, Mark, I will never forget (t)his wise words! Anyway I like your narrative underneath your kind of celebration with your 'special kind of artist-toy'. Its interesting to look and discover all the little and very fine grain structure of this beautiful color tint on the Japanese paper, so intense and with a woolly softness, which is almost to feel, like wool, or a very soft fur, let's say of 'a mouse'. Congratulations on your artistic nine years with all its beautiful memories that will be certainly numerous, my friend!

Stellar shading effects in these charcoal renderings of your brushes, performed on an art stock that I don't remember the name of. Charcoal paper, pebble board or a close relative?
