Description

I decided to show a little more of the old Klosterkyrkan. Kloster = cloister, kyrkan = church. The monastery was built in 1166 (100 years after the battle of Hastings) for nuns. At that time, Lund was the seat of the Scandinavian bishop and construction was under way for a lot of monasteries. Walking through town today the visitor can see plaques reminding us of each monastery. There was one on each city block! This massive construction led to the town increasing in size. Initially of sandstone in Romanesque style, the Klosterkyrkan was reconstructed in Gothic style with brick.during the 1300s. During the 1500's the reformation led to the dissolution and tearing down of many monastic orders and monasteries. The church remained after the monastery was closed and torn down in 1600. This photo is taken looking east. ENJOY! Lovely church and I'm glad the Protestants kept it going. Too bad about the convent, but that was par for the course in the 1500s.

Wonderful photo of this very historic church. Too bad they destroyed all those monasteries - I imagine they were very impressive structures.
