Description
Seems to be some confusion over the man's rank unless he received a posthumous promo.
One of yesterday's links leads to a somewhat better image than this, but there is one big (IMO) difference. This shot has all sorts of little touches added to the monument. The flag and all those stones. I've seen this sort of thing at other monuments around these Civil War fields and down at the Vietnam Memorial wall. The flags are pretty obvious, but I have to wonder about the stones and who is leaving these mementos and why? Was the person memorialized (or was someone in the unit being memorialized) by the person leaving the token? Is there a feeling of just having to do something to let the fallen/those who served know that they are still remembered. Is it something as crass as a photo bomb? Inquiring Weesels would like to know.
(I am aware of a practice of putting coins on gravestones, but stones on memorials? new one on me.) Then again ...

Also I recall there is a memorial to a Confederate general who fell at the high-mark on Cemetery Ridge and that (early 1980's); it was marked with a miniature rebel battle flag in similar manner. (And I will admit to being in a war of wits with the landscapers around a memorial involving and EA-3B and the unauthorized placement of a Navy flag some years back. The flag lasted 2 years. The airplane was moved to spite me... actually it is looking for a new placement.)
Oh well....
Enjoy; thanks for viewing.

great image and interesting question - however, comma, I have found a possible answer in this link:

General Meade promoted him the evening of July 2, 1863. The promotion was dated July 3, 1863.

Follow the link Mike gives us. It seems to be the right ballpark. Thanks, Mike.
Thanks, ikke.evc. I did not know that. However, I know of one general who was "demoted" recently. http://republicanherald.com/news/civil-war-general-to-be-honored-saturday-1.245402 ... the link sums it up, but there are other research avenues to follow if one is interested in Benjamin Christ.
