Description

This is for Carol (romanceworks).
You know, sometimes I think (when praising an artist) that I'm imposing my view on all of you rather than letting you discover their vision on your own: Will you feel the way I do? I have no idea...I realize I've walked in these artists' worlds for so long, their work has become dear and so familiar. I've been walking in Carol's world---both her and her art---since 2008, and all I can do is invite you to walk 'inside' her world until it washes you over. She paints flowers, plants, animals and people---all familiar themes---but she digs so deep into color and surges and power and 'bursts' that her subjects are, in some ways, just the entryway. Her inner-artist turns a flower into a cosmic explosion. I'm not exaggerating. She paints the cosmos in many ways; many of her flowers, for example, are metaphors for the universe.
My image is what I think flowers would create if they made a card for Carol. I personally consider Carol's flower-plant paintings to be equal to and even greater than Georgia O'Keeffe's: That's not easy for me to say, 'cause I adore O'Keeffe.
Carol sells in stores, galleries, publications, etc (she's been in the 'biz' for years incl retail design, graphic design, etc), and I wonder, do her commercial clients see the power in her work? If they don't, they're still going to see a wonderful colorist, a helluva a fine painter, and a truly caring interpreter of nature. But if they go deep, they'll see the power hidden inside it all; carol's working on a big plane. Even a lizard's face becomes a jeweled, primal mask in her hands. And in the last couple of years, she's moved into alcohol inks: I have no clue what they are---inks who drink whiskey???---but boy am I happy she went there: They've sent Carol into underground geysers and primal springs, and her work became even more primal, more protean, and wild. I've just loved it.
As for friendship, I've been hers for several years now; and through her struggles incl losses, health matters, the drudgeries of the art business, managing a large home, etc...when her art knocks on the door, all that 'other' stuff moves away and she's called. She's just called. She's been so supportive of me and others, she helped make this place home for me when I got here. That's very special.
So thank you, Carol, for everything; and Happy Birthday! My image is a combo of old paint, ink and Photoshop pieces, with some new; and I hope that light shines on you always, and gives you ease and endless inspiration. (Have a wonderful time with your family too!) With love and all the peace in the world, mark

Oh,Mark. Thank you so much for the lovely birthday dedication and art. Flowers speak to me in many ways, as you know, and they have personally told me this is the perfect birthday card. And you know flowers never lie. Their words are as true as their colors and fragrance. As true and beautiful as your heart, that always is a big part of your art and your writing. Just love the wonderful rainbow of colors you created, and the layering of different designs and yet each complimenting the other, like a bouquet. That’s the thing about flowers, they are equally beautiful alone or in a garden. And you always honor me and my art and touch my heart with your generous words. I’m very flattered you compare my floral art to O’keffe’s, as she’s one of my favorites. That woman knew how to get inside a flower. And as I’ve told you before, if I could live inside a flower I would. They are infinitely inspiring to me, a universe unto themselves. There is such glory and joy when they are in full bloom, and a little sadness when they fade, and so I paint them so they will live forever. My friendship with you has been blooming strong for many years now, never fading for a second, and always filling me with beauty and inspiration through every season of life. I’m so blessed to have you as a friend, and so happy you are part of my world, Mark. Thank you for caring about me, my art, and for all that you give to everyone. And for making my birthday very special with your beautiful words and art.

A very beautiful image with lovely vibrant colors just like Carols work. I can see that she is delighted with her birthday present. I love how you have added the little snowlike crust to give these flowers a natural feel. A beautiful image with lots of interesting parts to it. Very well done. 😀

I'm particularly drawn to the flower fountains in the first two panels. The positive and negative space, and (although this might be a bit prosaic) the way you used black and white in alternating panels and brought each around to the other side to create the frame. Beautiful colors, wonderful lines, and an all-around joyful piece!
