Description

This is a Suricate or more commonly known as a Meerkat! They are the most fascinating creatures and I can watch them for hours. I think I have taken +-500 photos of them and will upload a whole bunch more. They are cooperative breeders. Usually a single dominant female breeds. Subordinates of both sexes contribute by babysitting, while breeding females and males rarely do so. After leaving the natal burrow, pups are fed by other members until they are at least three months old. There is always a sentinel who will alarm the group when predators are in the vicinity - both in the air and on the ground.

There was a recent documentary here on BBC which for the first time fitted cameras to a couple of meerkats to film the newborn pups in the burrow. A first for the Cambridge uni research team.

A great capture. They are fun to watch and pose very nicely for photos and they are good with their families. But they can be murderous if others not members of their tribe approach.

Outstanding capture of the handsome meerkat, standing tall and alert within its habitat, Carin. I have photos taken at the local zoo some years back of these creatures, but this one, with its elegant tawny color, beats them all.
